
Kernels back on track with 3-0 win over Whitecaps

April 29, 2009 - The day after being shut out by Peoria in both games of a doubleheader, the Cedar Rapids Kernels recorded their first shutout of the year, a 3-0 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kernels starter Tyler Chatwood (1-0) allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out four over six innings for his first win as a Kernel. Mike Kohn struck out five over two innings of relief and Vladimir Veras walked two, but struck out the side in the ninth for his third save of the season.
Alexi Amarista came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple and 2 RBI. Anel De Los Santos extended his hitting streak to a team best seven games going 1 for 3 and Angel Castillo was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
West Michigan starter Victor Larez (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned0 on three hits and struck out two over 3 innings in taking the loss. Brian Pounds, Ronnie Bourquin and Gustavo Nunez had the Whitecaps three hits.
The second game of this three game set is Thursday night at 6:35 pm. It's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where fans can buy 12 oz. draft beer for a buck-fifty. Gates open at 5:30 pm
