Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that outfielder Jeremy Barfield has joined the Cougars from extended spring training at the A's complex in Arizona. Barfield swaps outfield spots with David Thomas, who has been promoted to the Stockton Ports (A-Advanced). The current move maintains a roster of 25 active players for the Cougars as the squad continues a 10-game homestand this evening against the Lansing Lugnuts at Elfstrom Stadium.
Barfield (8th Rd, 2008) becomes the youngest player on the Kane County roster and the 20-year old begins his first full professional season in the A's system with much promise. Upon being drafted by Oakland last June, Barfield spent the summer at Short-A Vancouver and batted .271 with 3 home runs and 41 RBI. Barfield's RBI output was tied for fifth-best in the Northwest League.
Barfield's name rings a familiar tune for Major League fans, as the 20-year old outfielder is the son of former big leaguer Jesse Barfield. Jeremy's dad enjoyed a 12-year playing career in the Major Leagues, belting 241 career home runs, receiving a pair of Gold Glove awards, and an All-Star Game appearance in 1986. Jeremy's older brother Josh made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2006 and is currently in the Cleveland Indians' farm system.
Barfield's addition comes with the news that Thomas, one of the Cougars' hottest bats through the season's first three weeks, is headed to California. Thomas (14th Rd, 2008) shared the Midwest League lead in home runs with four and had six multi-hit games for Kane County through the team's first 18 contests. Thomas joins a Ports outfield that includes former Cougars Jermaine Mitchell (2007) and Todd Johnson (2006-08).
Kane County, which leads the Midwest League's Western Division by 2.5 games, opens a three-game homestand against the Lansing Lugnuts this evening at 6 p.m. Left-hander Pedro Figueroa (2-0, 2.40) takes the bump for the Cougars and opposes the Lugnuts' Chuck Huggins (0-1, 2.45).
