Castro Pitches Dragons to Second Straight Win

Beloit, Wis. - Dayton Dragons starting pitcher Oscar Castro and two relievers combined to allow just two hits as the Dragons defeated the Beloit Snappers 2-1 on Wednesday night. The win gave the Dragons victories in consecutive games for the first time this season. They have now won four of their last six games and improved their record for the year to 5-14.

The game featured a tight pitcher's duel between Castro and Beloit's Brad Tippett. Through five innings, Castro had allowed only one hit while Tippett had given up two singles but had not allowed a runner past first.

In the top of the sixth, Dayton's Cody Puckett doubled to left with one out, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Kyle Day's single to right to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

Beloit tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Castro retired the first two batters before issuing his only walk of the night. A double to the fence by Evan Bigley then brought in the tying run from first.

But Dayton came right back to pick up the lead in the top of the seventh. With one out, Humberto Sosa lined a double to left field. One batter later, Kevin Coddington looped a single to center that scored Sosa from second to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

Castro (1-1) was outstanding over seven innings, allowing two hits and one run with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the victory.

Andrew Bowman replaced Castro to start the eighth and retired all four batters he faced. Scott Gaffney entered the game in the ninth with one out and the bases empty and recorded the final two outs for his first save.

Beloit had just four base runners in the game as Dragons pitchers did not allow anyone to reach base after Bigley's double in the sixth.

Dayton had nine hits in the game. Coddington, Dave Sappelt, and Carlos Mendez each had two hits.

The win was the Dragons first victory of the year in a one-run contest. They had lost their first six one-runs games prior to Wednesday. It was also their first win in a low-scoring game. The Dragons were 0-13 in games in which they scored less than six runs before the win in Beloit.

The Dragons meet Beloit at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the second game of a three game set. Leonardo Astorga, who has lost his first three starts while posting a 18.90 earned run average, will start for Dayton. The Dragons next home game is May 5th against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field.
