South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

avenport, IA - The South Bend Silver Hawks stranded a season-high 11 runners on base Wednesday, falling to the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-1 in the series opener at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities jumped on Silver Hawks starter Brett Moorhouse (LP, 0-2) for a run in the first. Former Notre Dame star Brett Lilley walked to start the rally, went to third on a double from Chris Swauger, and scored on an RBI single from Osvaldo Morales for the 1-0 lead. With first and third and only one out, Charles Cutler flew out to center, and Alberto Diaz threw out Swauger at the plate as he tried to tag from third to keep it a 1-0 game.

South Bend tied the game in the top of the fourth against River Bandits starter Chuckie Fick (ND) with three straight two out hits. Justin Parker started the rally with a single to right, and went to second when Alfredo Marte singled to left. Nelson Gomez followed with a single to center, scoring Parker and tying the game at 1-1.

Quad Cities struck for two more runs against Moorhouse in the sixth. Niko Vasquez singled to start the inning, and went to third on a double from Swauger. One out later, Cutler's sacrifice fly to right brought in Vasquez for the 2-1 lead. After a single moved Swauger to third, he scored on a wild pitch for the 3-1 lead.

The Silver Hawks missed out on some opportunities to score runs in the middle innings, stranding 11 runners on base in the game. The biggest threat to go by the wayside was a bases loaded one out situation in the sixth, but reliever Andres Rosales (WP, 2-0) got the two outs he needed to get out of the jam.

Dave Carpenter (SV, 1) pitched around a walk and a single in the ninth to get the save.

The Silver Hawks and River Bandits continue the three game series Thursday night with an 8:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. South Bend will start LHP Wade Miley (0-0, 4.11 ERA), while Quad Cities counters with LHP George Brown (0-2, 7.50 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 PM on 1620 AM WPNT "The Point" and online at www.silverhawks.com.
