Great Lakes Loons News Release
APPLETON, WI - Kyle Russell belted a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, but Corey Kemp responded with a three-run blast in the bottom half as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Great Lakes Loons 6-3 Wednesday night in the first game of the Loons' six-game roadtrip through the Badger state.
Russell's opposite field shot gave the Loons an early lead, but Kemp's three-run blast off the left-center scoreboard gave the Timber Rattlers a lead they never relinquished.
Wisconsin added an additional run in the third. Brett Lawrie double home Juan Sanchez to make the score 4-2.
The Loons pulled to within one in the fifth with the help of Dee Gordon's speed. With Gordon running from first, Jaime Pedroza grounded to third. Gordon continued around second for third, slid in safely, and advanced home on a throwing error on first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard. The Loons nearly tied the score that same inning, but Russell, attempting to score on a Tony Delmonico single, was gunned down at the plate by right fielder Erik Miller.
The Rattlers extended their lead to 6-3 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Kyle Smit (0-1) made his first start of the season for the Loons after three relief appearances in 2009. He allowed five runs, all earned in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.
The Loons continue their three game series in Appleton Thursday with the second game in the series against the Timber Rattlers. Game time is 7:35pm ET. The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
Right-hander Justin Miller (1-1) will start for the Loons opposite right-hander Michael Bowman (0-0).
