Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - For the first time in 2009, the Kane County Cougars have lost back-to-back games. They were shut out Tuesday by Beloit and lost, 2-1, Wednesday night in the opener of a three-game set against the Lansing Lugnuts at Elfstrom Stadium. Â Â The Cougars managed only three hits and scored just one unearned run. Jason Christian reached second on an error in the seventh and later scored a on double play grounder. He singled in the ninth and stole second but was stranded when the game ended. Grant Desme's third-inning double and Steve Kleen's seventh-inning single were the only other Cougars hits. Â Â Cougars starter Pedro Figueroa (2-1), who pitched seven shutout innings in his last start for a win, walked five and allowed two runs in 3 1/3 innings. The runs he allowed came after leadoff walks in the first and third. He yielded six hits and fanned one in the loss. Mike Hart and Kenny Smalley combined for 6 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief afterward, but the Cougars' offense was stymied by Chuck Huggins (1-1) and the Lansing bullpen. Â Â The Cougars (13-6), still in first place by 1.5 games, battle Lansing (5-13) again Thursday at noon CDT. Brett Hunter (0-0, 10.00) will face Ryan Koch (0-0, 7.04).
