Kernels and Bees Split Doubleheader

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Kernels and Burlington Bees split a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels came from behind to win the opener of the doubleheader 6-5. Pinch-runner Jeremias Pineda scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Kernels the lead in their last at-bat. Pineda pinch-ran for Michael Quesada, who had reached on an infield single to begin the inning. Pineda stole second base in his first action as a Kernel, reached third base on a groundout, and scored on the wild pitch by Bees reliever Kurt Spomer.

Burlington jumped in front of the Kernels 3-0 in the first inning. Jonathan Walsh drove in a pair with a two-RBI double, and Anthony Bemboom plated Walsh with a RBI single.

The Kernels scored four times in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Four straight batters recorded hits as three of those hits plated runners. J.D. Williams reached on a fielder's choice as Byron Buxton singled to put two men on. Niko Goodrum got the Kernels on the board with a two-RBI double. Jorge Polanco's RBI double scored Goodrum, and Dalton Hicks followed with a RBI single to plate Polanco, putting the Kernels in front.

The lead was short-lived as Burlington took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning. Andrew Ray drove home a pair of Bees with a double to deep left over the head of J.D. Williams.

The Kernels tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of two-out hits. Jorge Polanco tripled and then scored on a Dalton Hicks RBI double.

Josue Montanez (1-0) recorded the win in his return to the Kernels, allowing only one hit and no runs over the game's final two innings. Hudson Boyd started and allowed five runs and five hits over five innings while striking out four and walking three.

Kurt Spomer (1-3) suffered the loss for Burlington, allowing one run over one inning. Alex Keudell started and went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

In game two, the Kernels offense was held to only three hits as Burlington pitching struck out 13 in the Bees 6-4 win.

The Bees again pushed ahead for an early 3-0 lead. Michael Bolaski scored from third base on a balk by Kernels starter Steve Gruver in the second inning. Wade Hinkle connected for a two-run home run in the third inning, pushing the Bees advantage to three runs.

Tyler Grimes collected the first hit of the game for the Kernels in the fourth inning when he smacked a two-run home run to the first row in left. Travis Harrison, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on the homer to cut the Bees lead to 3-2. Jeremias Pineda followed the Grimes homer with a single, but he was stranded at second base to end the inning.

Burlington picked up single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, taking a 6-2 lead. Michael Bolaski's RBI double in the fifth scored Wade Hinkle. Sherman Johnson's RBI triple in the sixth plated Pedro Toribio. Sandy Martinez scored Jonathan Walsh with a RBI sacrifice fly to left in the seventh inning.

The Kernels plated two runs in the seventh inning, cutting the Bees lead to 6-4. J.D. Williams came home on a RBI groundout by Niko Goodrum. Byron Buxton picked up the third hit of the night for the Kernels when he doubled to right-center. He then scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Jorge Polanco.

Steve Gruver (2-1) took the loss for the Kernels, going three innings and allowing three runs. Alex Muren allowed two runs over three innings while Josh Burris went one inning and allowed one run.

Eduard Santos (1-1) was solid on the hill for the Bees, going five innings. He struck out 10 and walked three while allowing two runs on two hits. Joseph Krehbiel pitched a scoreless inning, and Jairo Diaz allowed two runs in one inning.
