Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL- The Peoria Chiefs were shutout for the second time in three days and the third time on the current road trip with a 4-0 loss to the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams are now 18-18 on the season heading into Thursday's double header.
Kane County grabbed an unearned run in the bottom of the first innings against Joe Cuda. Pin-Chieh Chen beat out an infield single to second and came all the way around to score on a fielders' choice error by Alex Mejia at shortstop. Bijan Rademacher, who reached on the run-scoring play, made it to third on the errant throw by Mejia but was left at third as Cuda recorded two strikeouts and got a pop up to escape the inning.
The Chiefs got their first baserunner in the third against Tayler Scott. Nick Martini singled to left with two outs and Breyvic Valera drew a walk. Scott got Mejia on a comebacker to end the threat. The Chiefs next baserunner was a one-out walk to Jordan Walton in the seventh inning but he was left at second.
Kane County broke the game open in the seventh after Cuda cruised through the middle innings. With one down Rock Shoulders singled to right and scored on a triple to center by Wilson Contreras for a 2-0 lead. Joe Scanio came out of the bullpen for the Chiefs and gave up a run-scoring single to Marco Hernandez who was then caught stealing second with Kane County up 3-0. Kane County added a run in the eighth when Contreras singled home Rademacher with the bases loaded.
Cuda (2-2) took the loss despite pitching his first quality start of the season. He struck out a career-high nine while allowing two earned runs on seven hits and no walks over 6 1/3 innings. Scanio allowed one run on four hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one, hit one and allowed an inherited runner to score.
