Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OHIO - Four errors led to two big innings as the Lake County Captains (13-23) trampled the Lansing Lugnuts (13-23) 13-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park.
The Lugnuts' four errors once again tied a season-high and allowed the Captains a total of 11 unearned runs. This comes on the heels of a four-error performance by Lansing on Sunday, allowing eight unearned runs in a 10-0 loss to the Great Lakes Loons.
Due to a pair of errors, Lake County scored six runs in the second inning off of Lugnuts starter Alonzo Gonzalez (Loss, 2-3) and then six more in a seven-run fourth inning, chasing him from the game after two more Lugnuts defensive miscues.
Griffin Murphy came on with the bases loaded in relief of Gonzalez in the fourth inning. Lake County's Claudio Bautista then took his first offering over the wall in right-center for a grand-slam home run, putting the Captains ahead 13-0 at that point.
Gonzalez lasted 3.1 innings, allowing a season-high 12 runs, but only two were earned. He struggled with his control, walking five Captains hitters and striking out just one.
The Captains had a pair of major-leaguers making rehab stints. Right-hander Blake Wood got the start for Lake County and pitched a perfect first inning. Vinnie Pestano (Win, 1-0) then came on in the second inning, pitching a 1-2-3 frame as well, earning the win.
Jake Sisco was the originally scheduled starter for Lake County, but he instead pitched six innings of relief.
In the loss, Kevin Patterson smashed two home runs off Sisco, and Gustavo Pierre was 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run.
The series rubber match comes Thursday night with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. with the Lugnuts sending right-hander Taylor Cole (1-2, 4.50) to the bump to take on Captains' right-hander Dylan Baker (0-2, 3.81).
