Kansas City Current, Midfielder Lo'eau LaBonta Agree to New Contract Through 2028

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Current midfielder Lo'eau LaBonta, who has been part of the club since its inception in 2021 and helped lead the team to the first National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Shield in franchise history, has agreed to terms on a new contract. The Current announced on Thursday that LaBonta signed a three-year deal, keeping her in Kansas City through the 2028 season.

"Lo has been a staple of the Kansas City Current since the beginning, and we are excited to extend her time here," said general manager Caitlin Carducci. "Her presence in training, in matches, in the locker room and in the community is one of a kind. Lo has been vital in cultivating a standard of excellence here at the Kansas City Current and will be for years to come."

A dynamic midfielder and captain for the Kansas City Current, LaBonta was initially drafted by Sky Blue FC in 2015 out of Stanford University and later played for FC Kansas City and the Utah Royals before returning to Kansas City in 2021 ahead of its inaugural NWSL season. With 180, she is one of 48 players in NWSL history with over 150 regular season appearances and became the 26th player to ever make 150 career regular season starts. She has also logged over 13,000 regular season minutes.

LaBonta, known for her leadership and goal celebrations, has over 120 appearances for the KC Current with more than 10,000 minutes across all competitions. She has recorded 21 goals and seven assists in the regular season with the Current. LaBonta solidified herself as the league's all-time great from the penalty spot on Sept. 26, 2025, when she converted her 14th career regular season PK. That moved her up to be tied with Megan Rapinoe for first in NWSL history for most regular season PKs.

"From baseball field to NWSL Shield, I've seen how far we've come and I'm hyped to see how far we can go," said LaBonta. "I've grown with this club and this city, and I've seen how belief turns into history. This new contract is about more than just soccer - it's about building a legacy, one celly at a time."

A native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., LaBonta earned a spot on the 2022 NWSL Best XI and was named to the 2024 NWSL Second XI. She has 10 NWSL Best XI of the Month honors - tied for third all-time - and earned the recognition in the first two months of the 2025 campaign. LaBonta had an assist when the Current won the inaugural Teal Rising Cup this past summer and helped guide the club to its first-ever NWSL Shield in September. She assisted both goals in the Current's victory in the 2024 NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup final and was a fundamental part of the club's NWSL Playoff run in both 2022 and 2024.

LaBonta earned her first United States Women's National Team (USWNT) call-up earlier this year for international friendlies against China PR on May 31 and Jamaica on June 3. She made her first appearance for the Stars and Stripes on May 31 as the oldest player to debut for the USWNT in the program's 40-year history, also subbing in during the second match. She then earned an invitation to the USWNT training camp during the October FIFA window, entering the match against Portugal on Oct. 26 and vs. New Zealand on Oct. 29.
