Team/Alumni Notes
Kane County is currently in first place in the Midwest League's Western Division with a second half record of 30-10. Thursday night's win over South Bend made the Cougars the first team in the league to reach 30 wins this half. The team is on pace to break the franchise record for most wins in a single half of a season, which was 47 wins set by the 2001 Cougars championship team. The Cougars have a three-game lead over Peoria for the division's second half title and a 12.5 game lead over Beloit for the wild card spot. The regular season ends on September 7 and entering play this evening, 30 regular season games remain. Pitcher Nick Baker picked up his ninth win of the season last night and is now the third Cougars pitcher with nine wins this season, joining Ethan Elias and Markus Solbach. The Cougars have not had a pair of 10-game winners since 2007 and only once have three Cougars pitchers reached 10 or more wins - Steve Bondurant, Chris Dunwell and Brad Knox in 2004. Elias' 2.27 ERA is best in the league. Infielder Marty Herum is batting .303, good for eighth-best in the league, and his 122 hits is second-best. Pitcher Josh Taylor pitched a nine-inning complete game on July 31, becoming the first Cougars pitcher since Aaron Brooks ('12) to go the distance. Closer Zac Curtis has a league-best 25 saves and is two saves away from tying former Cougar Bryan Moore ('00) for the franchise record of 27 saves.
Seattle outfielder Nelson Cruz ('03) is seventh in the major leagues with a .324 batting average and second with 31 home runs. San Francisco pitcher Santiago Casilla ('03-'04) set a career high recently by picking up his 27th save. Los Angeles Angels pitcher Huston Street ('04) has 26 saves. Cubs catcher Kyle Schwarber ('14) is batting .342 in 25 games. Pitcher Joe Blanton ('03) was recently dealt from Kansas City to Pittsburgh. Pitcher Zack Godley ('14) was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA before being sent back to Double-A Mobile. Pitcher Andrew Bailey ('07) has made two rehab appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees). Outfielder Jeremy Barfield ('09) is batting .364 in 16 games at Triple-A Albuquerque (Colorado). Outfielder Brett Eibner ('11) is batting .307 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI at Triple-A Omaha (Kansas City). Infielder Jeimer Candelario ('13-'14) is batting .339 in 16 games since being promoted to Double-A Tennessee (Cubs). Teammate Pierce Johnson ('13-'14) is 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA in ten starts at Tennessee. Pitcher Andrew Triggs ('12) has a 0.74 ERA in 31 outings with Double-A Bowie (Baltimore). Infielder Chesny Young ('14) is batting .329 in 75 games at Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach (Cubs). (Statistics through 8/6)
