Ian Happ Helps South Bend to 4-1 Win

South Bend Cubs News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - South Bend center fielder Ian Happ saved a run with a diving catch in the top of the third and cracked a two-run shot in the home half of the inning, as the Cubs defeated Clinton, 4-1, on Friday night in the series opener at Four Winds Field.
The Cubs (20-21 second half, 49-59 overall) never trailed in besting the LumberKings (8-33 second half, 34-76 overall), who have the worst record in the Midwest League. South Bend dropped two one-run decisions in the previous series against Kane County.
"It was huge, huge for our pitching to do what they did, limit them to one run, couple big RBIs throughout the game," Happ said. "Can't say enough about what [reliver] Corbin [Hoffner] did. It was a great win."
South Bend starter James Norwood tossed five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. The right-hander logged his third start since rejoining South Bend from Arizona, where he finalized his transition from reliever to starter.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Happ skied a towering two-run home run barely over the left-field wall, his first long ball with South Bend. Happ, who was drafted ninth overall by Chicago in June, pushed South Bend ahead 2-0.
"I thought it had a chance," Happ said. "It was a little high. But I think the wind helped me out a little bit."
In the top of the frame, Happ sprinted in and slid to snare a sinking fly ball with a runner at third and two outs.
South Bend reliever Corbin Hoffner earned a seven-out save, lowering his ERA to 0.50.
In the fifth, South Bend first baseman David Bote laced an RBI single to center field to score shortstop Gleyber Torres and stretch the gap to 3-0.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Clinton designated hitter Kristian Brito struck an RBI single to right field, but Cubs right fielder Jeffrey Baez gunned home for the final out and keep the lead at 3-1. Baez ranks third in the Midwest League with 15 outfield assists.
In the bottom of the seventh, Baez led off with a single to right field and advanced to third on a two-base error by Clinton right fielder Estarlyn Morales. Torres then ripped a sacrifice fly to center to reel in Baez and widen the margin to 4-1.
South Bend and Clinton meet Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET at Four Winds Field in the middle game. Cubs right-hander Jake Stinnett (4.78 ERA) is scheduled to oppose LumberKings righty Lukas Schiraldi (4.88 ERA).
