
Captains out Slug Bees in Opener

(Burlington-IA) The Burlington Bees (50-60) lost the series opener with the Lake County Captains (55-53) 8-6 on Friday night at Community Field.
Ayendy Perez kicked off his career night with a bunt single in the bottom of the first inning. After David Fletcher lined out, Perez stole second. With runners at first and second, Steven Mateo lined a single to center, scoring Perez, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. The Bees doubled their lead in the second inning when Perez picked up his second hit of the game, lining a single to left, scoring Natanael Delgado, upping the score to 2-0.
After Lake County got on the board in the top of the third inning, Zach Houchins gave the Bees their two run cushion back on his 11th home run of the season, making the score 3-1.
The Captains broke out for three runs in the top of the fourth inning, thanks to a double by Ordomar Valdez, scoring Bobby Ison and a groundout that resulted in two more runs scoring. Leading 4-3 in the fifth inning, Anthony Santander singled to start the inning and then came home to score on a Bobby Bradley double, upping the score to 5-3. Later in the frame, Yonathan Mendoza grounded out, scoring Bradley, extending the Captains lead to 6-3. Lake County added two more runs in the seventh on a single by Medoza, scoring Santander, and a double by Ison, scoring Mendoza, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Zach Houchins picked up his third hit of the game, in the bottom of the seventh, smacking a double to left, scoring Tim Arakawa, cutting the deficit to 8-4. Ayendy Perez tallied his fifth hit of the night in the eighth inning, lining a double to left. Arakawa pulled the Bees to within a pair, smashing his fourth homer of the year, scoring Perez, cutting the Captains' lead to 8-6.
Lake County reliever, Thomas Pannone (6-5) earned the win while Bees' starter Jake Jewell (5-6) was charged with the loss. Luke Eubank (3) earned the save. The Bees and the Captains continue the series Saturday night at 6:30 when Michael Bolaski faces Anderson Polonco.
