Four Straight for the Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps matched a season-high by winning their fourth consecutive game as they beat the Kane County Cougars 9-3 Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the first when Kade Scivicque sent a shallow fly ball that landed fair down the right field line to score Rashad Brown, and Joey Pankake delivered a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Franklin Navarro ripped a two-run double into the right-center field gap to extend the 'Caps lead to 4-0. An inning later, Chuck Taylor and Colin Bray plated a pair of runs with base hits to bring the score to 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, Zach Shepherd drew a bases-loaded walk as part of a three-run outburst to give West Michigan a 7-2 lead, and end the scoring in the contest.

A.J. Ladwig (9-8) pitched seven innings allowing two runs while striking out five in earning his ninth win of the season, while Kane County starter Ethan Elias (9-4) suffered his fourth loss allowing a season-high seven runs through 4.1 innings of work. The Whitecaps record improves to 23-17 in the second half, bringing their overall record to 56-53. Kane County falls to 30-11 this half, with a combined record of 66-43. Gerber, Scivicque, Shepherd and Will Kengor all had two hits to lead the Whitecaps offense. The win was the fourth straight for West Michigan, matching their longest winning streak of the season on two different occasions, including the most recent from July 1-4.
