
Captains Sting the Bees

Lake County Captains News Release
(Burlington, IA) -After spending the previous three games being limited offensively by one of the Midwest League's best pitching staffs, the Lake County Captains offense came alive on Friday. The Captains pounded out eight runs on fourteen hits on their way to an 8-6 win over the Burlington Bees.
The Bees would take the early lead with single runs in the first and second innings off of Captains' starter Julian Merryweather.
In the bottom of the first inning Ayendy Perez singled and stole second to start the inning. A passed ball would move him to third. With one out he would come into score on Steven Mateo's RBI single.
Perez would also contribute to the Bees' run in the bottom of the second inning. Natanael Delgado singled to start the inning. An infield single combined with a throwing error would allow Delgado to go from first to third. Perez then followed with an RBI single to centerfield to score Delgado for a 2-0 lead.
The Captains would cut the deficit to just a run in the top of the third inning. Greg Allen and Taylor Murphy singled back to back to start the inning. A balk would move both runners up a base. With one out Allen would come into score on an RBI groundout by Bobby Bradley to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After the Bees got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, the Captains would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Bobby Ison and David Armendariz would single back to back to start the inning. With one out Ordomar Valdez doubled to rightfield to score Ison and put runners at second and third. Allen would then attempt to bunt up the firstbase line. Bees' firstbaseman Steven Mateo picked up the bunt and missed on a tag attempt of Allen. While trying to avoid the tag, Allen slid past the base without touching it. While Mateo tried to tag Allen, Armendariz scored from third and Valdez never broke stride around third while scoring from second to give the Captains a 4-3 lead.
The Captains added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning. Anthony Santander singled and then scored on Bobby Bradley's RBI double. Bradley would also score on a Yonathan Mendoza RBI groundout.
Lake County added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Santander again singled and then moved to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. He would then score on a Mendoza RBI double. Mendoza also score when Ison followed with an RBI double of his own.
Burlington would get back into the game with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. However, Luke Eubank slammed the door shut with a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Julian Merryweather took a no decision in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed 3 runs, all earned, on 9 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3. Caleb Hamrick would then pitch a perfect 0.1 of an inning in relief. He did record a walk or a strikeout. Thomas Pannone (6-5) earned the win in 3.0 innings of relief. Pannone allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 7. Eubank (3) earned the save with 1.0 inning of work. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
The Captains and Bees will continue their series on Saturday night from Burlington, Iowa. Anderson Polanco will get the start for the Captains with a first pitch set for 7:30pm ET. You can hear all the action on 1330AM WINT.
