Kalamazoo Wings Week in Review
February 19, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo continued a tradition on Wednesday (2/14), as they hosted the Elmira Jackals during the 7th Annual Borgess Pink Ice Game presented by WKFR and WOTV. The K-Wings struck early on the pink ice as Kory Karlander brought the love on Valentine's Day with his 29th goal of the season. Kalamazoo continued the scoring frenzy in the second with a left circle slap shot from Nick Bootland (29) to extend the lead to 2-0. Putting the contest out of reach, Justin Cross deflected a Jeff Brown shot from the point giving the K-Wings a 3-0 lead. Ryan Nie recorded his third shutout of the season knocking aside all 24 shots he faced. With the 3-0 victory, Kalamazoo is now 4-3-0 on pink ice and riding a four-game winning streak on the "hearted" surface.
Starting an abbreviated two-game road swing, Kalamazoo headed to Port Huron Friday (2/16) to battle the Flags. Kalamazoo took advantage of their lone power-play opportunity in the opening period, when Karlander (30) scored his UHL leading 13th first goal of the season midway through the opening period. Jesse Rycroft (5) connected on a one-timer from the right circle to extended the K-Wings lead to 2-0 13:15 into the second period. Rycroft continued the scoring frenzy in the third period scoring on a rebound 3:48 into the period. The goals by Rycroft were his first in a 17-game span. Glenn Detulleo (10) gave Kalamazoo a 3-0 lead five minutes later, roofing a power-play rebound. Kalamazoo capped off the lamp lighting with less than six minutes remaining in the game with an Andrew Leach (6) slap shot from the slot. Nie continued his dominance, turning aside 26 shots to earn the shutout.
Kalamazoo wrapped up the week on Saturday (2/17) in Flint against the Generals. After a scoreless opening period, the K-Wings jumped on the scoreboard with a power-play goal from Bootland. The tally from Bootland tied him with Karlander for the team lead in goals scored (30). Karlander, who recorded an assist on the goal, extended his point streak to seven games. Special teams helped the K-Wings to extend their lead. Finding room at the middle of the blue line, Brown (5) sent a laser past Jason Muzzatti to give the K-Wings 2-0 lead. With Flint pulling their goaltender, Kalamazoo tacked on one more, this time it was Karlander scoring shorthanded into empty net propelling the K-Wings to 3-0 win. The story of the game was the K-Wings stingy defensive effort led by Nie, who for the third straight outing shutout the opposition and in the process, rewriting UHL history, as the K-Wings now hold the UHL team record for longest consecutive shutout streak with 203:39 minutes.

Three K-Wing players start the week on impressive multi-game point streaks. Kory Karlander has registered a point in each of his last seven games, while Nick Bootland and Jeff Brown have reached the scoring column in their last four games.
Career Season
Defenseman Adam Elzinga has had a career season. Elzinga, who earlier this year set personal highs for goals (6) and points (24) in a season, set another person high by chiming in his 18 assists.
