IHL 2 Kalamazoo Wings

Nie Goaltender of the Week

February 19, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the United Hockey League and 2005-06 Central Division, Tarry Cup and Colonial Cup champions, announce that goaltender Ryan Nie has been selected as the UHL's Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week for the period ending February 18th.

Perfect, that's the only word that can describe the goaltending brilliance that Nie displayed last week. In three games last week, Nie shutout the Elmira Jackals, Port Huron Flags and Flint Generals consecutively denying 74 shots during the stretch.

Over his past five starts, Nie's performance has been mind-boggling, earning four shutouts. The last goal allowed by the K-Wings was back at the 16:21 mark of the second period against Fort Wayne on February 11th. The 203:39 minutes of shutout hockey by the K-Wings breaks the UHL record of 189:27 held by the 2005-06 Fort Wayne Komets and places Nie within 44:23 minutes of tying the UHL goaltending record of Komets' netminder Kevin St. Pierre (2000-01).

The Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week Award is the first by Nie and the fourteenth collected by a K-Wings goaltender in the team's UHL history. The award is the third earned by Kalamazoo this season, with both previous honors being claimed by Tom Askey.

Kalamazoo will begin a three-game week this Wednesday (2/21) against the Rockford IceHogs in the first of two Education Day Games presented by American Village Builders and Culvers. As of today, just over 200 seats remain for Wednesday's 10:30 a.m. face-off. The K-Wings will also be home this Friday (2/23) for a 7:30 p.m. battle against Quad City before heading off for a Saturday (2/24) contest against Bloomington.

Tickets for this week's contests and all K-Wings' home games are available at the Wings Stadium Ticket Office during their regular business hours of Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. or Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fans can purchase their tickets by calling the (269) 345-5101 or logging onto www.ticketmaster.com.
