January 8, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo opened up the 2007 portion of their schedule with back-to-back road games. The first came Friday (1/5) when they traveled to Quad City to face-off against the Mallards. Quad City struck first, early in the opening period with a goal from Patrick Nadeau (4). Kalamazoo answered back with a pass from Lucas Drake to Justin Cross, who scored his 18th goal of the season. Drake's assist continued his ten game point streak. Nick Bootland (20) scored his second short-hander of the season on a deflected Quad City pass. The Mallards evened the score late in the second with a tally from Chad Wollard (13). The K-Wings went ahead with just 1:07 remaining in the second with a goal from Kory Karlander (14). Quad City came out strong in the third period, scoring two goals in just over five minutes. Kalamazoo defenseman Jeff Brown knotted the game with his first goal of the season with just 1:32 left in the game, forcing the Mallards to a shootout. Alexander Valentin, Karlander, and Bootland all scored in the extra session while Quad City only managed one goal. The K-Wings skated away with the 5-4 victory over the Mallards.
The K-Wings wrapped up their Western Conference road trip Saturday (1/6) when they traveled to the Rockford MetroCentre to battle the IceHogs. Looking to extend their winning streak to five games, Kalamazoo came out strong in the first period with a power play goal from Kory Karlander (15). Nick Bootland (21) scored his second short-hander in two nights with a goal that mimicked the one from the night before. A one-timer from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (3) gave the K-Wings the only tally in the second period. The scoring continued into the third stanza when Andrew Leach (5), Valentin (1), and Cross (19) all lit the lamp within a four minute span. Valentin's goal was his first of his professional career. Rockford scored their only goal of the night late in the third with a blast from Jesse Bennefield (11). Kalamazoo's Ryan Nie stopped 25 of Rockford's 26 shots to earn his 7th victory of the season. The K-Wings defeated the IceHogs 6-1.
