Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The Kalamazoo Wings began a four game road stretch on Tuesday (12/26) with a trip to Muskegon to battle the Fury. Kalamazoo was looking to rebound after losing to Muskegon in a shootout at Wings Stadium on Friday (12/22). The K-Wings scored first with a goal from Scott Dobben (10), extending his goal streak to four games. The Fury answered back with a blast from Dave Noel-Bernier (9) at 9:25 into the opening period. Just 46 seconds later, Glenn Detulleo regained the lead for Kalamazoo with his fifth goal of the season. Noel-Bernier (10) tied the game near the end of the first. Kalamazoo scored the only goal in the second stanza when Jesse Rycroft (4) scored his second goal as a member of the K-Wings. Muskegon knotted the game in the third when Noel Bernier (11) recorded his third goal of the night. The hat trick was not enough to keep the Fury ahead as Casey Handrahan (2) scored the game winner with just 3:21 left in the game. Kalamazoo came away with the 4-3 win over Muskegon.
Kalamazoo continued their road trip on Wednesday (12/27) when they traveled to Port Huron to face-off against the Flags. The K-Wings came out strong after Kory Karlander (12) scored a short handed goal just 4:42 into the opening period. Justin Cross lit the lamp 36 seconds later, scoring his 13th goal of the season. Port Huron responded in the second period with a power play goal from Bobby Kukulka (8). Mike Olynyk tied the game with shot from the left point. The Flags went ahead in the third with a tally from Garett Cameron (11). Cross (14) tied the game after he netted a pass from Lucas Drake. The K-Wing tally proved to be not enough as Port Huron went on to score three more goals late in the third, skating away with the 6-3 victory over Kalamazoo.
The K-Wings started back-to-back road games on Friday (12/26) with a visit to the Perani World Hockey Arena & Event Center in Flint to battle the Generals. Kalamazoo struck first when Drake (7) intercepted a pass from Karlander to score on the power play. Flint's Dion Hyman (4) scored a power play goal on a rebound in front of the K-Wings net. The Generals continued the momentum into the second with a goal from Terry Marchant (7). Dobben (11) evened the score for Kalamazoo with just 3:09 left in the second stanza. The third period's only score proved to be the difference maker. Joe Markusen lit the lamp for the second time this season, earning his first game-winner. The K-Wings defeated the Generals 3-2.
Wrapping up their last leg of their road trip before returning home, Kalamazoo traveled to face-off against arch rivals the Fort Wayne Komets on Saturday (12/30). The Komets scored late in the first with a one-timer from J.C. Ruid (19). Fort Wayne continued to score into the second when Matt Syroczynski recorded his fourth goal of the season. Kalamazoo struck back with a tally from Dobben (12) with just 1:48 left in the second period. The K-Wings tied the game with an unassisted goal from Cross (15) at 6:04 into the third, forcing the game into a shootout. Kalamazoo's Tom Askey stopped all five attempts from the Komets in the extra session. Nick Bootland scored the only goal in the shootout and the K-Wings beat the Komets 3-2.
Kalamazoo finished off the 2006 portion of their schedule at Wings Stadium on Sunday (12/31) versus Flint during the 5th Annual New Year's Eve Bash. Drake continued his hot streak in the first period, scoring his 8th goal of the year and in the process extending his K-Wings' season high point streak to nine games. Later in opening stanza, Flint's Mike Zbringer (12) knotted the contest at 1-1 with his 12th goal of the year. Kalamazoo took the lead over good with a tally from Cross (16) 15:31 into the second period. The K-Wings put the game out of reach scoring two empty net goals in the third period, helping Kalamazoo to skate away with a 4-1 victory.
