Kalamazoo Wings Week in Review

March 20, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

The K-Wings started off the week on Friday (3/17) versus the Elmira Jackals at Wings Stadium during the 25th Annual World Famous St. Patrick's Day "Green Ice" Game Presented by Fifth Third Bank, WRKR and WOTV. Kalamazoo and Elmira treated the K-Wings' first sellout (5,413) crowd of the season to a very entertaining contest. In a game that would be decided in the final seconds, Elmira defeated the Kalamazoo 3-2. Elmira's Sam Paolini (15) scored the game-winning goals with four-tenths of a second remaining in the 3rd period. Kalamazoo received goals from Damian Surma (21) and Daniel Carriere (7). Besides being the first sellout of the season, the sellout was the fourth for the K-Wings in their UHL history.

On Saturday (3/18), the K-Wings finished off their four-game home stand against the Missouri River Otters. With the K-Wings leading 3-2 after two periods of play, Kalamazoo used a four-goal outburst in the third period to skate past the Otters 7-2. Tyler Willis (3 assists), Damian Surma (1 goal, 2 assists) and Lucas Drake (1 goal, 2 assists) led the K-Wings offensive assault by each producing three points. Goaltender Jeff Reynaert stopped 23 shots to earn his 14th win of the season. The victory also made Reynaert 6-0-1 in his last seven starts.

Kalamazoo concluded their week on Sunday (3/19) with a road game against the Fort Wayne Komets. The K-Wings dominated the opening period, scoring three times on 12 shots en route to a 4-1 victory over Komets. Former Komet, Dustin Virag led all K-Wings in scoring with 2 points, both on assists. Goaltender Joel Martin became just the second goaltender in the league this season to reach 30 wins. Damian Surma (22), Jason Deitsch (31), Lucas Drake (27) and Tim Turner (9) all contributed goals in Kalamazoo's victory.

Fast Forward

After playing six games in a ten day span, the Kalamazoo Wings will hit the ice just two times this week. Kalamazoo will start the week on Friday (3/24) with a trip to Moline, Illinois to battle the Quad City Mallards. The K-Wings are 3-1-0 against the Mallards this season, with two of those victories coming at The Mark of the Quad Cities. Dating back to April 4, 2004, the K-Wings have won five straight games in Quad City. The Mallards start the week in third place in the Western Division and they are just three points behind the Fort Wayne Komets for second place.

On Saturday (3/25), the K-Wings will conclude week and their three-game road trip against the Muskegon Fury. Kalamazoo, who starts the week just one point behind Muskegon for first place in both the Central Division and overall in the UHL, are 5-3-1 against the Fury this season and 2-2-0 against Muskegon at the L.C. Walker Arena.

That's What Willis is Talking About

Forward Tyler Willis is currently on a seven-game assist streak. The seven-game streak is the longest assist streak in the United Hockey League and it is also just one-game shy of tying the K-Wings season high of eight games held by Tyler Rennette.

On a Roll

Kalamazoo's Damian Surma has scored a goal in each of his last five games. The five-game streak is the longest goal streak by a K-Wings player and it is also the second longest streak in the UHL.

Lighting the Lamp

So far this season, the K-Wings have scored 282 goals. The 282 goals sets a K-Wings UHL franchise record for most goals in a single-season. The old record was held by the 2003-04 team, which scored 281 goals.

Powering Up

Jason Deitsch scored his 15th power-play goal of the season yesterday against the Fort Wayne Komets. The 15 man-advantage goals, which leads the K-Wings, also ties the K-Wings UHL franchise record for most power-play goals in a single-season. Deitsch holds the record with Jim Duhart (1999-00) and Randy Holmes (2000-01).

The Obscure Stat of the Week

The K-Wings always seem to bring out their Sunday best. On the season, the K-Wings are 9-0-1 on games played on the first day of the week.
