Vipers Week in Review

March 20, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers traveled to Glens Falls, New York on Wednesday to face the Adirondack Frostbite, where they lost by a final score of 2-0. They headed to Danbury, Connecticut from there to face off against their former captain David Beauregard and his new team, the Danbury Trashers. The Trashers took two games from the Vipers on Friday and Saturday at the Danbury Ice Arena by final scores of 5-1 and 5-2. The three game series concluded at the Roanoke Civic Center on Sunday afternoon, where the Trashers completed the sweep, overcoming the Vipers by a final score of 6-3.

The Vipers were shut down by the Frostbite defense Wednesday night and only managed 10 shots on goal on Derek Gustafson, who was perfect in net for Adirondack. Greg Koehler and Ryan Bennett each scored for the Frostbite.

Jan Jas scored in the first period for the Vipers, but the Trashers managed four consecutive second-period goals, three coming within 42 seconds of one another, to take the 5-1 win over Roanoke Valley. Former Vipers captain David Beauregard scored his first goal as a Trasher on Shawn Conschafter at 14:35 of the third period.

The Vipers got on the board first on Saturday night in Danbury, as Mark Scott and Matt Elich got two quick ones past Jayme Platt to give their team the lead. Shawn Collymore tied it up for Danbury before the end of the first period, and the Trashers scored three more before the end of the match to take the 5-2 lead as Platt was perfect on 12 second and third period Vipers shots.

Sunday, March 19th vs. Danbury

The Vipers had the home-ice advantage on Sunday afternoon for game three of the three-game weekend set against the Trashers. Jan Jas scored at 12:53 of the first period to give the Vipers the first lead, but former Viper David Beauregard, making his first appearance in Roanoke since being traded to the Danbury Trashers one week ago, spoiled the lead with a goal at 18:57. Beauregard's counterpart, Carlyle Lewis, gave the Vipers the lead back just 22 seconds into the second period off assists from new Viper captain Travis Smith and Matt Elich. The Trashers would respond with five straight, however, to make it 5-3. Josh Tataryn, who just returned to the Vipers from the Elmira Jackals, where he spent the past two and a half months after starting the season with Roanoke Valley cut the Trashers lead in half as he got one past Sly Daigle, but it was too late in the game for the Vipers to start a rally as they dropped their third straight to the Trashers 6-3.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers will be hosted by their in-state rivals the Richmond RiverDogs on Wednesday and Friday, March 22nd and 24th at the Richmond Coliseum before they return home to face the visiting Elmira Jackals on Saturday and Sunday, March 25th and 26th at the Roanoke Civic Center.
