Kalamazoo Wings Week in Review
February 6, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The K-Wings started their three-game week on Wednesday (2/1) with a morning tilt at the Perani's Hockey World & Event Center against the Flint Generals. Leading 1-0 heading into the second period, the K-Wings exploded with a season high six-goal outburst and added one more goal in the third period in the team's 8-2 victory over the Generals. The K-Wings were lead by Nick Bootland and Dustin Virag, who led all players in scoring with four points each.
Kalamazoo returned to Wings Stadium on Friday (2/3) as they hosted the Motor City Mechanics on Cost Cutters of Kalamazoo and WRKR Mullet Night. The K-Wings out shot the Mechanics 22-5 in the opening period and received two goals from Nick Bootland (23,24) and the eventual game-winner from Brad Church (6) to give Kalamazoo a 3-0 lead. After Kalamazoo added two more goals in the second period to up their lead to 5-0, Motor City would prevent the shutout with a Matt Smith (14) goal midway in the third period, as the K-Wings went on to defeat the Mechanics 5-1.
The K-Wings concluded their week on Saturday (2/4) on WQSN Night at Wings Stadium against the Flint Generals. Trailing the Generals 2-0 in the second period, the K-Wings fired back with seven unanswered goals; including five in the third period to take a 7-2 lead. Kalamazoo was led by Jason Deitsch and Lucas Drake, who each tied the K-Wings season high for points in a game with four. Deitsch recorded a first in his professional career by netting a hat trick (15,16,17) in the third peirod. Flint's Vin Hellemeyer (4) added one more goal for the Generals, but it wouldn't be enough, as Kalamazoo skated away with a 7-3 victory over Flint.
Fast Forward
The Kalamazoo Wings will play three games in three nights starting this Friday (2/10), when they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to face-off against their archrivals, Fort Wayne Komets. So far this season, the K-Wings are 2-1-1 against the Komets. Fort Wayne starts the week tied for second place with the Quad City Mallards in the Western Division.
On Saturday (2/11), Kalamazoo will finish their abbreviated two-game road trip with a game against the Muskegon Fury. Muskegon starts the week a top of the Central Division, with a league best record of 34-5-4. Prior to the K-Wings 7:30 p.m. face-off against their intra-state rivals, the Kalamazoo Wings Alumni will play a Muskegon Alumni team at 5 p.m. to benefit the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. The charity game is the second between the teams this season; the Muskegon Alumni defeated the K-Wing Alumni three weeks ago at Wings Stadium.
Fast Forward Continued
The K-Wings will conclude their week on Sunday (2/12) with a home game against the Port Huron Flags. The 4:00 p.m. face-off against the Flags is the start of a four-game home stand for the K-Wings. Kalamazoo is 4-0-1 against Port Huron this season. Sunday also coincides with Meijer Scout Night and K-Wings post-game skate. Following the K-Wings-Flags game, fans can skate with the K-Wings team. Admission for the skate is $5, skate rental if needed is $2.
Seventh Heaven
Forward Kory Karlander has been on a recent tear. Karlander starts the week on both a seven-game point and assist streak. The seven game assist streak is just one game shy of tying Tyler Rennette's K-Wings season high eight-game streak. Karlander has also recorded a point in each of his last 12 road games.
Leader of the Pack
Defenseman Daniel Carriere etched his name into K-Wings history last Saturday. Carriere became the K-Wings UHL franchise All-Time Leader in Assists (113), surpassing Randy Holmes, who played for the K-Wings from 1999-2002.
Closing in on 100
K-Wing forward Dustin Virag is nearing a personal milestone. Virag needs one more goal to reach 100 for his career. Dustin, who is currently on the K-Wings 7-Day IR, could be back in the lineup on Friday when the K-Wings play his former team the Fort Wayne Komets.
On a Roll
The K-Wings are currently on a three-game winning streak. During their recent success, the K-Wings have outscored their opponents 20-6.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
Kalamazoo will next play at home this Sunday (2/12) versus the Port Huron Flags. So far this season, the K-Wings are 5-0-1 on Sunday games, including 2-0-1 against the Flags. The K-Wings UHL all-time record on Sunday games is 34-27-6.
