Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo started the week on Friday (1/28) with a home date against the Muskegon Fury. The defending Colonial Cup Champions started the scoring earlier in the opening period, with the first of two goals from Rustyn Dolyny (16). Later in the period, the K-Wings struck back with a goal from Tim Krueckl, which tied the game at 1-1. Muskegon gave itself some breathing room, by scoring the game's next four goals to jump ahead 5-1. Starring at a four goal deficit, the K-Wings would give its crowd of 4,002 something to cheer about, as Kalamazoo mounted a comeback. Kalamazoo received offensive contributions from Kevin Kotyluk (13), Shaun Fisher (6), Daniel Carriere (5), and a game tying goal from Yannick Carpentier (13) to make the score 5-5. Late in the third period, the Fury took advantage of a K-Wings penalty, when Brant Blackned (16) scored the eventual game-winning goal on a breakaway. The K-Wings, who out shot the Fury 47-22 for the game, couldn't penetrate the puck past Fury goaltender Clayton Pool in the final 5 minutes of regulation, as the Fury went on to defeat the K-Wings by the final of 6-5.
A sell-out crowd of 5,146 at Wings Stadium on Saturday (1/29) greeted the K-Wings, as Kalamazoo hosted the Fort Wayne Komets. The crowd of 5,146 was the largest this season at Wings Stadium and was the first sell-out this year for the K-Wings. The Komets, who came into the game as the league's most prolific offense, flexed their scoring muscles by scoring the game's first three goals. Kalamazoo attempted a comeback late in the second period when Yannick Carpentier scored his 14th goal of the season to make the score 3-1. The goal from Carpentier, was his 14th of the season, which ties him Tim Turner for the K-Wings team lead. In the third period, after the Komets extended their lead to 4-1, the K-Wings would give the sell-out crowd the game's most memorable moments. First, Kalamazoo native Steve Doherty, who was making his season debut, ripped a shot past Fort Wayne's Kevin St. Pierre to record his first goal as a professional. In the latter moments of a game and with the goalie pulled Komet forward Chris Grenville rifled a shot from the right circle; however, Kalamazoo forward Yannick Carpentier step between the pipes and made an amazing save, which brought the capacity crowed to it's feet. Despite the save from Carpentier, the Komets would hang on to their lead and go on to defeat the K-Wings by the final of 4-2.
On Sunday (1/30) the K-Wings concluded their three games in three nights against the Motor City Mechanics. After each team traded goals in the opening period, the Mechanics stormed out in front by scoring the games next two goals. Kalamazoo answered back with a pair of goals of their own. First, it was Tim Krueckl (9) scoring on a wrap around to make the score 3-2 in favor of Motor City. The K-Wings tied the game at 3-3 when Tyson Turgeon (5) deflected a Tyler Willis shot past Motor City's Cory Campbell. In the final minute of regulation the Mechanics would take the lead for good, as Joe Burton (19) scored on a 5-3 power play with 24 seconds to play to give Motor City a 4-3 victory over Kalamazoo.
