
Kahaulelio's Homer Propels Mudcats to Win

Birmingham, AL --- Jake Kahaulelio hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead Carolina to a 9-4 victory over Birmingham in the series opener at Regions Park on Tuesday night.
James Avery (W, 2.3) worked 5 2/3 innings en route to his second straight victory, yielding 10 hits and four runs.
Carolina took a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings, but the Barons pushed ahead 4-3 on a John Shelby two-run homer against Avery in the fourth. However, a single by Denis Phipps tied the game in the sixth one batter before Kahaulelio connected for his team-leading 12th homer against Angel Garcia (L, 1-5).
Chris Denove led the Mudcats' 11-hit attack with three singles, while Phipps and Mike Costanzo knocked in two runs apiece.
The Mudcats continue their three-game series against the Barons on Wednesday night with LHP Travis Webb starting for Carolina at 8:05 PM ET.
