September 1, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Add another accolade to the list. Stars' second baseman Brett Lawrie was not only named to the 2010 Southern League mid-season All-Star team, but now he's been honored with the title of Southern League Postseason All-Star.
Lawrie has spent the entire 2010 season with the Stars playing in 130 games, second most in the Southern League. He has compiled a .283 batting average (151-for-533) with eight home runs, 35 doubles and a league-leading 15 triples.
The Stars talented second baseman has remained at the top of the Southern League rankings throughout the season. He currently leads the league in at bats (533), extra-base hits (58), hits (151), total bases (240), and triples (15). He is in the top five in three other categories: doubles (5th, 35), games (2nd, 130) and runs scored (2nd, 85). Lawrie also leads the league in a defensive category: errors. He has committed 22 errors over the season, the most of any second baseman in the Southern League. However, teammate Zelous Wheeler has committed 34 errors on the season, beating out Lawrie for that undesirable top spot on the team.
In addition to the two All-Star nods, Lawrie was named the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for June and named to the MLB Futures Game World Roster. Lawrie was drafted by the Brewers in the first round (16th overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
The 2010 Southern League Postseason All-Star Team included players from the North and South Division and was voted on by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media. Robinson Chirinos (Tennessee - catcher), Johan Limonta (West Tenn - first base), Lawrie (second base), Matt Dominguez (Jacksonville - third base), Osvaldo Martinez (Jacksonville - shortstop), Tony Campana (Tennessee - outfield), Collin Cowgill (Mobile - outfield), Brandon Guyer (Tennessee - outfield), Dave Sappelt (Carolina - outfield), Corey Smith (Chattanooga - designated hitter), Elih Villanueva (Jacksonville - right-handed pitcher), Tom Cochran (Carolina - left-handed pitcher), and Matt Gorgen (Montgomery - relief pitcher) make up the entire roster. Vinny Rottino (Jacksonville) was named the Utility Man and Campana earned the added honor of Best Hustler. Lawrie was the only Huntsville player represented on the roster.
Lawrie and the rest of the Stars continue their road trip in Montgomery tonight at 7:05 p.m. RHP Mark Rogers (5-8, 3.83 ERA) will take the mound for Huntsville against the Biscuits' LHP Josh Satow (1-3, 6.28 ERA). The Stars return home on Friday for the final home stand of the regular season. They are currently four games out of the Wild Card race behind West Tenn with seven games to go.
