Game Rewind
Wednesday, February 29th @ Florida (Kalamazoo 5-Florida 4-Shootout)
Estero, FL- Snapping a three-game losing streak, the Kalamazoo Wings earned their 17th road victory of the season with a come-from-behind 5-4 shootout victory over the Florida Everblades at the Germain Arena.
Having a tendency this season to start well on the road, Wednesday would be no different for the K-Wings, as Darryl Bootland continue is scoring prowess notching his team-best 23rd goal of the season 58 seconds into the contest.
Pulling even later in the period, Rylan Galiardi (13th) skated in front of the K-Wings net and redirected a Scott Pitt pass past Riley Gill 16:68 into the period.
A fortunate bounce early in the second period gave the Everblades a 2-1 lead. After a slap shot from Kevin Quick recoiled off of a K-Wings defensemen, it went to the tape of Matt Beca for his 17th goal of the season.
Battling in front of the Everblades net, Dustin Cloutier (9th) scored the equalizer by racking the puck in the crease over the goal line 7:46 into the stanza.
Scoring in similar fashion as they started the period, Matt Marquardt (18th) benefited from a K-Wings block shot by scoring on the rebound midway through the period to regain a single goal advantage for Florida.
Registering back-to-back goals to start the third period, the K-Wings reclaimed the lead. Trent Daavettila trickled a wrister over the goal line 55 seconds to tie the game at 3-3 and then just 33 seconds later former Everblade defenseman, Elgin Reid notched his fifth goal of the season to put Kalamazoo ahead 4-3.
Reid's goal was his second of the year against his former team.
Scott Pitt (15th) forced overtime midway in the period with a backhander from to the left of the crease.
Kalamazoo outdueled Florida 2-1 in the shootout earning goals from Justin Taylor and Dwight Helminen.
Friday, March 2nd @ Florida (Florida 9-Kalamazoo 3)
Estero, FL- In a third period collapse that featured allowing five goals in a 13-minute span, the Kalamazoo Wings suffered their worst defeat of the season, losing 9-3 Saturday night to the Florida Everblades.
Finding room in the high slot while on the power-play, Mike Ratchuk (8th) sent a slap shot past Riley Gill 3:30 into the opening period to give the Everblades an early 1-0 advantage.
Earning another man-advantage tally eight minutes into the second period Florida extended their lead on a rebound marker from Rylan Galiardi (14th).
Keeping up the pressure midway through the stanza, Trevor Bruess (14th) gave the 'Blades a 3-0 lead when his wrist shot was initially stopped by Gill, but the rebound deflected off of a K-Wing defenseman and over the goal line.
Kalamazoo got on the scoreboard late in the period, when Kory Karlander (14th) rifled a one-timer past Pat Nagle for a five-on-three power-play goal 16:48 into the period.
Creating a turnover at the K-Wings blue line early in the third period, David Rutherford (20th) scored on a breakaway 1:07 into the third to give the Everblades a three-goal advantage.
Quickly cutting the deficit down to a single goal, Prab Rai (1st) netted his first goal of his pro career, followed by a shorthanded marker from Joe Charlebois (2nd) two minutes later.
Sparked by a power-play goal from Rutherford (21st), the Everblades scored five-unanswered goal in a span of 13 minutes, including two more from Galiardi, who recorded a hat trick in the victory.
Saturday, March 3rd @ Florida (Florida 5-Kalamazoo 4-Shootout)
Estero, FL- Fighting off two third period deficits, the Kalamazoo Wings were able to earn a point from the overtime, but unable to secure the victory in a 5-4 shootout loss Saturday night against the Florida Everblades.
Sneaking just to the left of the net, Nick Sirota (13th) lifted a wrister over the shoulder of John Muse 4:26 into the contest to give the K-Wings the early advantage. The goal from Sirota extended the forward's point streak to a K-Wings' currently team-high of six games. '
Jamming in a rebound 1:30 later, Brayden Irwin knotted the game with his 10th goal of the season. Florida struck again midway in the stanza with a power-play marker from Trevor Bruess (15th) to put the 'Blades ahead 2-1.
Taking advantage of their first power-play of the night, Darryl Bootland (11th) notched his team-leading 24th tally of the season, deflecting a Mike Matczak slap shot into an empty net, when Muse collided behind the net with a K-Wing trying to play the puck and couldn't get be back to the crease.
Grabbing the lone goal of the middle period, the Everblades reclaimed the lead 15:46 into the second with a tally from Scott Pitt (16th)
Starting a stretch of three goals under two minutes between the two teams, Trent Daavettila (15th) lunged in the crease and pushed a rebound across the line to tie the at 3-3 6:26 into the third period. The goal was Daavettila's seventh power-play goal of the season, which ties him with Matczak and Justin Taylor for the team-lead.
Forty seconds later, while on a power-play, David Rutherford (22nd) regained the lead for the Everblades by scoring his team-leading 10th power-play goal of the season.
Not wasting anytime, Sam Ftorek (10th) recorded the equalizer 1:10 later with slap shot from the right point, which forced overtime.
Florida outscored Kalamazoo 1-0 in the shootout receiving their lone goal from the third shooter Mathieu Roy.
Fast Forward
The K-Wings will begin a three-game week and a six-game home stand this Wednesday, March 7th with a 10:30 a.m. face-off versus the Cincinnati Cyclones during the second of two Education Day Games, presented by Bronson Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Edison Electric, McDonald's, Meijer's and RxOptical. On the season, the K-Wings are 7-4-1-0 versus the Cyclones, who start the week in second place in the North Division, three points behind Kalamazoo.
On Friday, March 9th, the K-Wings will host the Chicago Express at 7:30 p.m. during Old Burdick's Night and a Frugal Fan Friday, featuring $1 Beers, $1 Hot Dogs and $1 Pepsi products.
The K-Wings and Express will meet again on Saturday, March 10th with another 7:30 p.m. encounter during Eaton Corporation United Way Night, featuring a Saturday "Celebrity" Series appearance from SpongeBob SquarePants and a post-game concert from the Douglas James Band. On the season, the K-Wings are 4-4-0-1 versus the Express, who start the week in third place in the North Division, seven points behind Kalamazoo.

The K-Wings, who will play the Cincinnati Cyclones this Wednesday morning during the second of two Education Day Games, presented by Bronson Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Edison Electric, McDonald's Meijer and RxOptical, are no strangers to a.m. starts. All-time, Kalamazoo is 9-7-1-1 in education day games and are 5-7-0-1 at home, including a 3-1 victory two weeks ago versus Toledo
Six Pack
Forward Nick Sirota has earned points in six straight games. The six-game point streak is the longest current point streak by a member of the K-Wings.
Northern Exposure
The K-Wings will play a majority of March contests within their own division. Twelve out of the K-Wings final 13 games will play against teams for the North Division.
Home Sweet Home
Starting on Wednesday, the K-Wings will commence a season-long six-game home stand. Eight of the K-Wings remaining 13 games will played on Vanrick Drive.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
Despite being one of the most offensive scoring teams in the league, the K-Wings don't have a major presence on the top scorers list. While the K-Wings are ranked second in the ECHL and first in the Eastern Conference with an average of 3.63 goals per game, the only Trent Daavettila (tied for 5th, 61 points) ranks in the top 20 in ECHL scoring.
