Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Record Last Week: 0-1-1 Overall Record: 27-10-5

Game Rewind The K-Wings started the week on Friday (1/27) at Wings Stadium against the Rockford IceHogs. The IceHogs scored the game's first goal midway in the opening period, when Robin Big Snake (18) skated the puck in front of the crease and knocked it past goaltender Joel Martin to give Rockford a 1-0 lead. In the second period, the IceHogs extended their lead to 3-0 by adding goals from Steve Yetman (10) and Bob Nardella (3). In the 3rd period, the K-Wings attempted a comeback, when team captain Nick Bootland (20) deflected a puck by Michel Robinson, but the goal would be the last scored in the game, as the IceHogs defeated the K-Wings 3-1.

On the Saturday (1/28), the K-Wings remained at home, as they hosted their archrivals, the Fort Wayne Komets. Fort Wayne jumped out to early 1-0 lead, just 2:03 into the game, when Lance Galbraith kept the puck in the attack zone and found Brent Rumble at the right side of the cage for Rumble's first goal of the year. Just one minute and forty seconds after the Komets took the lead, the K-Wings answered back, when Nick Bootland deflected a Kory Karlander shot by Fort Wayne's Kevin Kurk. The goal, which was Bootland's 21st of the season, ties him with Tyler Rennette for the K-Wings team lead. Fort Wayne regained the lead late in the second period with a goal from Colin Chaulk (13). After the Komets added another goal from Rob Guinn (2) early in the third period, the K-Wings would answer back with two unanswered goals from Dustin Virag (7, 8), which tied the game at 3-3. Virag's second goal of the game was scored off a rebound with 50.1 seconds remaining in regulation. The game would eventually head into a shootout, where the Komets outscored the K-Wings 3 to 2 and win the game by the final of 4-3.

Fast Forward

The Kalamazoo Wings will hit the ice three times this week. The K-Wings first game of the week will be a road test against the Flint Generals. Besides being a battle of division rivals, it will be the K-Wings first morning game of the season. After the Flint Education Day, the K-Wings will host two morning matinees of their own later this season. The K-Wings, who start the week in second place in the Central Division, are 4-0-0 against the Generals this year. The Generals start the week in fourth place in the division and are five points behind the Motor City Mechanics for third place. The K-Wings and the Generals will meet for a second time this week, when Kalamazoo host Flint this Saturday night (2/4) at 7:30 p.m. on WQSN Night.

On Friday (2/3), Kalamazoo will host the Motor City Mechanics at 7:30 p.m. on Cost Cutters of Kalamazoo and WRKR Mullet Night. The K-Wings are 3-1-0 against the Mechanics this season. Kalamazoo starts the week 13 points ahead of Motor City for 2nd place in the division. The Mechanics feature forward Adam Edinger, who is coming off seven points (3g, 4a) in three games last week, which earned him the Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week.

Road Warriors

K-Wing forwards Kory Karlander and Nick Bootland haven't had problems getting points on the road. Karlander has recorded a point in each of his last 11 road games, while Bootland has amassed a point in each of his last 9 games. The road point streaks are the two longest streaks in the league.

Carriere Nearing a Milestone

Defenseman Daniel Carriere needs three more assists to tie a K-Wings franchise UHL record. Carriere, who has 108 assists with Kalamazoo, is three shy of Randy Holmes, who is the all-time leader in K-Wings UHL history with 111.

Closing in on 100

K-Wing forward Dustin Virag is nearing a personal milestone. Virag needs three more goals to reach 100 for his career.

Putting Up the Shots

Besides leading all UHL defensemen in plus/minus (+30), Kalamazoo's Greg Labenski is near the top of another category. Labenski ranks second among all of the league's d-men with 146 shots on goal.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

This Wednesday the K-Wings will play in their fourth matinee Kids Game in their UHL history. In the morning starts, the K-Wings are 2-2-0, including perfect 1-0-0 on the road.
