February 5, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - Upping their home winning streak to a season-high four games and their overall unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-0-1), the Kalamazoo Wings erased a third period deficit to come-from-behind and defeat the Elmira Jackals 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday night.
Attacking early, Sam Ftorek (10th) gave the K-Wings the lead 3:37 into the game with a slap shot from the point.
Pulling even 1:20 later, Dane Walters (6th), the former Western Michigan University product, tied the game at one with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Elmira started the second period off fast. Scoring a goal 2:01 into the stanza, former K-Wing, Harry Young (2nd) utilized a screen in front of netminder Jordan Binnington to give the Jackals a one goal advantage and the only goal of the period.
The Jackals had plenty of scoring chances in the period. Though they didn't score on the power-play, Elmira had six man-advantage opportunities in the period. Elmira finished the game 0-for-7 on the power-play.
Not looking to squander any chances in the final period, Kalamazoo capitalized on their lone power-play chance of the stanza.
Earning his 8th power-play goal of the season and 11th overall, Ftorek struck for his second goal of the night. Ftorek, who leads all ECHL defensemen in power-play goals, is also tied for the league-lead on man-advantage tallies. The K-Wings finished the night 1-for-4 on the power-play.
Kalamazoo out-dueled Elmira 3-2 in the shootout, receiving goals from Justin Taylor, David Pacan and Chris Lawrence, who celebrated his 26th birthday with the eventual game-winner.
Kalamazoo will hit the road to take on the Fort Wayne Komets with an 8 p.m. encounter at the Allen County Coliseum this Friday, February 7th.
The K-Wings will host the inaugural Van Andel Institute Purple Community Game presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union this Saturday, February 8th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Toledo Walleye.
This game is a continuation of VAI's grassroots fundraising program Purple Community, and raises funds for cancer and neurodegenerative disease research and science education at Van Andel Institute
Activities for fans during Purple Community night will include a purple photo booth in the concourse, t-shirt giveaways, the opportunity to become a Purple Community member and Mascot Olympics during intermissions. A video featuring K-Wings Defenseman Sam Ftorek and VAI researcher Dr. Jeff MacKeigan will debut during the game to educate fans on the benefits of disease research.
Over a dozen mascots including Paws, the mascot of the Detroit Tigers, will be competing in the K-Wings Mascot Olympics.
