As the Portland Winterhawks begin their pursuit of the Ed Chynoweth Cup, a Junior Winterhawks team has brought a national championship to Portland.

Monday morning the Portland Junior Winterhawks Bantam AA team won the national title in the Youth Tier II 14U 1A Division at the 2015 Toyota-USA Hockey Youth Nationals in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jon Koltvedt and Dylan Conway scored in regulation as the Junior Winterhawks were tied 2-2 with the Junior Steelheads (Idaho) to set up overtime. In the extra frame, Sammy Willman sped up the ice on an end-to-end rush and scored to give the Junior Winterhawks the national championship with a 3-2 victory.

"We're incredibly proud of Head Coach Scott Brown, Assistant Coach Brett Andres and all the players for winning a national championship," said Portland Winterhawks President Doug Piper. "They are a great example of the progress the Junior Winterhawks program has been making in recent years, and we couldn't be happier for them."

The Winterhawks will honor the championship Bantam team Saturday when the Hawks host the Seattle Thunderbirds at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Game 5 of their first round series in the Parklane Mattresses Winterhawks Playoffs.
