Last time out...
The Freedom lost 4-1 to Normal on Sunday as the CornBelters swept the series. Normal got a run in the first inning on two infield singles and two stolen bases. Cameron Monger reached on an infield single and stole second and third base. Then Sam Judah drove him home on an infield single of his own. Pat McKenna homered for the CornBelters in the fourth inning to make it 2-0. An Aaron Dudley RBI single brought home an unearned run in the sixth and they tacked on a final run in the top of the ninth on a Santiago Chirino RBI double. Florence scored their only run of the ball game in the ninth inning. Sam Eberle reached on an infield single. Cody Bishop doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Rob Kelly brought home Eberle on a RBI grounder but Florence could do no more damage in the ninth. The Freedom wasted a good outing from Casey Henn, seven IP, 2 ER.
For Starters Game One...
Coleman Stephens won his first two starts of the season but lost his two most recent start, including an 8-3 decision at the hands of the Normal CornBelters on May 29, his most recent outing. Stephens went four and a third innings, giving up five runs on seven hits in the defeat. 2015 is Stephens' fourth season of professional baseball and his second go-around in the Frontier League. Florence acquired Stephens as part of a three-team trade on December 28, 2014, which saw Jacob Tanis head to Windy City. The right-hander made his professional debut in 2012 with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the North American Baseball League. Stephens split the 2013 season between the Fort Worth Cats of the United League and the Frontier Greys, compiling an 8-3 record in 20 appearances, 18 starts. Last season, Stephens played in the American Association, splitting time between Amarillo and Gary.
For Starters Gamer Two....
Chuck Weaver is out to an outstanding start in 2015, winning Frontier League Pitcher of the Week honors in week two and getting a tough luck no-decision in his most recent outing against the Gateway Grizzlies on May 27. In that start he went seven and a third innings, giving up only two runs on six hits while striking out nine. Weaver shined in 2014 as he finished the season with a 2.65 ERA, good for first on the team and fifth in the Frontier League. His notable outings included a career high eight innings of one-run ball against Southern Illinois on June 14, seven innings of one run ball on June 28 against River City, seven innings of shutout ball against Gateway on July 3 and seven innings of shutout ball against Traverse City on August 13. In 17 starts, Weaver went six or more innings 13 times. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings.
