Wild Things Split Twin Bill with Rockford in Midweek Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, PA - The Wild Things split their doubleheader against the Rockford Aviators on Wednesday, June 3 at CONSOL Energy Park. The Wild Things kept the winning streak going by winning the first game 201, but Rockford ended the streak's extension winning 5-4 in game two of the twin bill.

The Wild Things started the first game off strong in the bottom of the first when Lee Orr hit a single bringing David Popkins in for the first run of the night. The Aviators responded right back scoring one run in the second inning.

Solid defense from both ball clubs forced the game into extra innings. The Wild Things held their ground as the treated fans to free baseball, not allowing the Aviators to score in the extra inning.

Sam Mende started the Wild Things off strong in the eighth inning, crushing the ball down the first baseline into right field allowing him to make it to second base. The bases were loaded for second baseman Austin Wobrock who delivered a clutch single over the shortstop's head to bring Sam Mende in for the walk off 2-1 victory.

The second game began with first baseman, Lee Orr, drilling the ball over the fence in right field, which led to a two run first inning for the Wild Things. The Aviators fought back in the thirdwhen they scored three runs of their own to take a 3-2 advantage. The Wild Things answered back when Maxx Garrett hit a double bringing Lee Orr in for a run after stealing second base.

The Wild Things were able to overtake the Aviators in the fourth inning when David Popkins hit his sixth home run of the season. The Aviators answered back once again in the sixth, however, scoring back-to-back runs. Ryan Green came in on an error and Jaron Shepherd scored on Michael Hur's single to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of Rockford. The Wild Things were unable to amount another comeback, giving the Aviators their 13th win of the season.

The Wild Things next game is tomorrow, Thursday, June 4 at 7:05 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Park in the rubber match of the Aviators series. Tomorrow also marks American Heart Association Night at the ballpark, where Kent Tekulve, former Pittsburgh Pirate and Wild Things Baseball Operations Director, will be in attendance.
