Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (June 3, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners mounted a four-run rally in the sixth inning to break up a pitcher's duel and Rick Teasley pitched seven shutout innings as they beat the Schaumburg Boomers 4-1 and evened up the series at one game apiece at Rent One Park.
Neither side scored in the first five innings of the contest as Teasley (3-1) and Edwin Carl (0-2) tossed up zeroes to match each other nearly pitch-for-pitch. Teasley wiggled out of jams with multiple runners on base in the first and third innings to keep the game scoreless, while Carl also ended up working around the baserunners he allowed.
The game was broken open by Southern Illinois with a big four-run spurt in the sixth inning. Niko Vasquez started with a leadoff infield single and Wendell Fairley followed with a walk. Vasquez then stole third and a throwing error on Boomers catcher Michael Valadez allowed Fairley to trot to second base, setting the Miners up with no one out and two in scoring position.
Frank Martinez then singled off the pitcher up the middle for the game's first run, and Jerrud Sabourin flared a single to left field to score another run and earn his 200th professional RBI, making it 2-0. After a sacrifice bunt by Steve Marino moved the runners to second and third, Brendan Slattery banged a big single up the middle to plate both Martinez and Sabourin for a 4-0 Miners lead.
Teasley did the rest to earn his third win of the season, allowing only four hits and a single walk with five strikeouts. The Boomers were able to score in the ninth, but with the tying run at the plate and two outs, Pete Perez came in to notch his first Miners save to end the game on a fielder's choice. Martinez and Slattery each had two hits in the contest as the Miners evened the series up.
They will go for a series win over the Boomers on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. A starter yet to be named for the Miners will take the hill against the Boomers' Anthony Gomez.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
