Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (8-11) defeated the Tennessee Smokies (9-10) by a 4-2 score in the fifth and final game of the five-game series at Smokies Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win was Jacksonville's second straight, and the Jumbo Shrimp earned a series win by taking three out of five games in Tennessee, the first road series victory of the season for the club.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Nick Neidert (2-1) earned the win, working five innings where he allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Tennessee right-handed starting pitcher Michael Rucker (1-2) suffered the loss, working five innings where he allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Marcus Crescentini worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the year for Jacksonville.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings. Eric Jagielo changed that on one swing, as he homered with two outs in the fourth inning with a towering home run to right field to put Jacksonville in front 1-0. The Shrimp added to the lead with two outs in the top of the fifth, with Isan Diaz hitting an RBI double before Kyle Barrett's RBI triple grew the lead to 3-0. Tennessee got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, with an RBI single by Erick Castillo and an RBI double from Trent Giambrone to cut Jacksonville's lead to 3-2.
The final run came in the top of the sixth inning, as Rodrigo Vigil hit an infield single to short, and a throwing error by Tennessee shortstop Connor Short on the play scored John Norwood to put the lead at 4-2, which would be the final. Jacksonville left-handed reliever Jose Quijada and Jeff Kinley earned holds by keeping the Smokies off the board in the sixth through eighth innings, before Crescentini's scoreless ninth earned him the save.
Norwood led the Jumbo Shrimp at the plate with a three-hit performance, and the Jumbo Shrimp were 3-for-9 batting as a team with runners in scoring position.
The Jumbo Shrimp will bus home through the night to Jacksonville, and tomorrow night will welcome in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for the start of a five-game homestand on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Right-handed pitcher Jeff Brigham (3-0, 0.60 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Pensacola right-handed starter Daniel Wright (2-1, 4.29 ERA). Fans can listen to the game on the Jumbo Shrimp Network presented by Community First, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the pregame show "Shrimp On Deck" locally on Sunny 102.3 FM, on the TuneIn Radio app, and www.jaxshrimp.com.
