Portland Sea Dogs News Release

BRING OUT THE BROOMS - The Portland Sea Dogs swept the Binghamton Rumble Ponies last week, after securing a 3-1 victory on Sunday. In the fourth, Christian Koss got things rolling with a one-out double. Izzy Wilson quickly brought him home, taking a base hit to center field, plating Koss to take a 1-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Wilson led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout from Tyreque Reed. Stephen Scott hit into a fielder's choice at first base, allowing Wilson to score, adding the Portland's lead, 2-0. An insurance run came in to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the ninth. Wilson collected a one-out base hit to get the offense rolling. Scott doubled down the left-field line, scoring Wilson from first, increasing the advantage for Portland, 3-0. Luke Ritter drove the only run for Binghamton home with a double in the ninth inning, making the score 3-1.

CHARLIE ESHBACH PASSES AWAY AT 70 - The Portland Sea Dogs are saddened to announce the passing of our founding President and General Manager, Charlie Eshbach, at the age of 70 following a lengthy illness. Eshbach was the Sea Dogs' first employee, hired by team Founder Dan Burke to lead his franchise and the return of professional baseball to the city of Portland for the first time since 1949. Eshbach was the primary visionary of the Sea Dogs brand and the builder of the franchise. He served as the team's President & General Manager through the 2010 season and remained as the team's President through the end of the 2018 season when he stepped down from the team leadership position after 25 years. He remained with the club as a Senior Advisor. In 1995, Eshbach co-founded the Strike Out Cancer in Kids program which has raised over $5,000,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.

NOT ONE, BUT TWO - Boston's RHP Garrett Whitlock and LHP Josh Taylor are both scheduled to pitch tonight for the Sea Dogs in Major League rehab appearances. Whitlock pitched for the Worcester Red Sox on July 8th and tossed 2.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. Taylor also pitched for Worcester in his last appearance on July 10th. He went 1.0 perfect inning with a strikeout.

EASTERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Izzy Wilson has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of July 4-10. Wilson appeared in five games during the week where he hit .474 (9-for-19) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, seven runs scored, and eight RBI. He led the league in average (.474), Slugging % (.842), and OPS (1.366). Wilson is the second Sea Dogs' player to honor the honor this season joining Pedro Castellanos who earned the accolade for the week of June 13-19. Additionally, three Sea Dogs' pitchers have taken home Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors this season: Chris Murphy (June 20-26), Victor Santos (May 30-June 5), and Brayan Bello (May 2-8

HOW MANY HOME RUNS - The Sea Dogs have put on quite the power display last week, recording at least one home run in every game. In total, Portland has blasted 13 homers during the five games this week in Binghamton. The homers have come from Hudson Potts, David Hamilton (2), Tyreque Reed, Tyler Dearden, Alex Binelas (2), Ceddanne Rafaela, Stephen Scott, Izzy Wilson, Nick Sogard, Christian Koss and Kole Cottam.

HAMILTON KEEPS HITTING - Hamilton has enjoyed a great start to July, but most recently, he has mounted a six-game hitting streak. Going back to July 3, Hamilton is 7-for-24 (.292) with two home runs, one double, three RBI, four walks, and three strikeouts. He has also been extremely productive once getting on base during this streak. He has stolen two bases, raising his season total to 31, and has made his way around to score 9 runs over the streak.

SECOND-HALF CEDDANNE - Since getting into the latter portion of the season, Cedanne Rafaela has been spectacular, to say the least. In the last series, he made an appearance at number three on SportsCenter Top 10 with his home run robbing catch on Friday. Looking at his stats since July 1, Rafaela is 10-for-31 (.323) with a double, a triple, two home runs, and three RBI. Much like David Hamilton, Rafaela has been productive while running the bases. He has stolen two bags while making his way around to score eight times over the past seven games.

PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Victor Santos will start tonight for the Sea Dogs, his third start against the Patriots this season. In those two starts, Santos is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA. Through 12.0 innings against the Patriots, Santos has allowed seven runs on 12 hits while walking two and striking out five. He has given up three homers to Somerset.
