Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Connor Scott brought two runs home in a 2-for-4 game, but a five-run first inning was too much for the Curve to overcome as Richmond defeated Altoona, 6-4, on Tuesday night at PNG Field.
The Flying Squirrels (5-8, 45-37) scored five times in the top of the first inning off Curve (8-5, 41-41) starter Carmen Mlodzinski. The Curve right-hander walked one and hit two batters in the inning to go with an error by Andres Alvarez at third base and two hits allowed. Shane Matheny knocked a two-run double to highlight the offense in the inning. Mlodzinski was lifted from the game after 0.2 innings before JC Flowers got the final out of the frame.
Altoona scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on a Scott RBI-single. Brendt CItta opened the frame with a double and moved to third on a Liover Peguero single. Scott then knocked home Citta on a ball to right field before Richmond starter Kai-Wei Teng finished out the inning.
Scott tagged on another RBI in the eighth on an RBI-double off Clay Helvey. He scored two batters later on a Matt Fraizer single to cap a two-run frame for the Curve. It was the second RBI of the game for Fraizer, who brought home a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the fourth off Teng.
Flowers tossed 4.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit on three strikeouts. Austin Roberts allowed one run on two innings with four strikeouts before Enmanuel Mejia threw two scoreless frames to end the contest.
The Curve had 11 hits in the loss and left 10 on base. Peguero went 2-for-2 with two walks, while Jared Triolo went 2-for-5 . Blake Rivera earned his first save of the season in a one-two-three ninth to earn the save.
Altoona continues its six-game series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. RHP Kyle Nicolas takes the ball for Altoona, with RHP Trenton Toplikar on the mound for the Flying Squirrels.
