Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, NY - José Martínez produced the best game of his Major League rehab assignment, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs, but it wasn't enough as the Syracuse Mets fell to the Buffalo Bisons, 8-4, at Sahlen Field on Wednesday night.
Buffalo (66-41) struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Forrest Wall led off with a triple, and then Otto Lopez grounded out, holding Wall at third base. Tyler White followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Wall to put the Bisons in front, 1-0.
Syracuse (42-65) responded with Martínez's first home run, a solo shot to lead off the top of the second inning, which tied the game, 1-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, Martínez struck again with another solo homer to left-center field to put the Mets ahead, 2-1.
Buffalo tied things up in the bottom of the fourth. Cullen Large led off with a walk, and then with Kellin Deglan at the plate, Large advanced to second on a balk by Syracuse pitcher Zack Godley. Deglan proceeded to hit an RBI double to make it a 2-2 game.
Syracuse regained the lead in the top of the sixth. José Peraza led off the frame by reaching on an error by Buffalo third baseman Nash Knight. With Khalil Lee batting, Peraza stole second base, and then Lee walked to put runners at first and second base with no outs. After Wilfredo Tovar struck out, Martínez connected with his third hit of the night, this time a one-run single to bring home Peraza and give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Lee advanced to third on the play, and David Thompson knocked home Lee with an RBI groundout to make it 4-2 Syracuse.
However, Buffalo responded with a big bottom of the sixth. There were two outs and nobody on base when Knight doubled. Logan Warmoth followed with a walk, and then Wall singled to load the bases. Franklyn Kilomé came out of the bullpen to replace Godley and gave up a two-run single to Otto Lopez which tied the game, 4-4. With Tyler White batting, Lopez stole second, and the throw by catcher David Rodriguez ended up in center field. As a result, Lopez advanced to third base and Wall came home to give the Bisons a 5-4 lead. White ultimately worked a walk, and then with Gregory Polanco at the plate, Kilomé threw a wild pitch which allowed Lopez to score as Buffalo increased its lead to two, 6-4.
The Bisons added some breathing room in the bottom of the eighth. Lopez led off with a single, and then White and Polanco struck out. Richard Ureña provided a two-out single, followed by a two-run triple by Large to make it 8-4 Bisons.
Syracuse and Buffalo return to Sahlen Field on Thursday night for the third game of the series. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
