August 3, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the North American Baseball League announce the signing of 1988 American League Most Valuable Player Jose Canseco.

Canseco is scheduled to appear in the WhiteWings' lineup Saturday, August 3 when Rio Grande Valley hosts the McAllen Thunder at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field.

Canseco, 48, played for 18 seasons in the American League. His 462 career home runs ranks sixth all-time among Latino major leaguers.

With a unique combination of power and speed Canseco became the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season during his MVP season when he led the Junior Circuit with 42 home runs and stole 40 bases. Canseco also led the American League in home runs in 1991 with 44.

An admitted steroid user, Canseco was instrumental in exposing the plague of steroids in baseball after testifying to Congress in 2005 and authoring two books, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big," in 2005 and "Vindicated" in 2008.

He also has appeared on Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice," been a celebrity boxer, and a mixed marital arts fighter.

In 2011, Canseco hit .256 with eight home runs and 46 runs batted in as a player-manager for the North American Baseball League's Yuma Scorpions and even pitched on occasion. In 2010, Canseco hit .385 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 11 games for the United League's Laredo Broncos.

This season, Canseco played in 20 games for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Canadian-American Association.
