Jose Canseco Added to United League

United League Baseball president Byron Pierce announced the signing of Jose Canseco to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings late this week.

Jose Canseco had a decorated Major League Baseball career playing for eight different teams from 1985-2001, including the Texas Rangers ('92-'94). The Cuban-American was a member of the All-Star team a total of six times, won the World Series twice, was a Silver Slugger four times, won the coveted Most Valuable Player award for the American League in 1988, was named the American League Rookie of the Year, and won the Comeback Player of the Year award.

Jose Canseco has continued his professional baseball career as a member of independent baseball since 2006. The 48-year old played in 2006 for the Long Beach Armada and won Golden Baseball League's Home Run Derby. On August 14, 2010, Canseco signed a short team deal with the Laredo Broncos of the United Baseball League. He served as bench coach and designated hitter. He then signed with the Yuma Scorpions of the North American League before joining the Worcester Tornadoes.

Jose Canseco will make his first visit to LaGrave Field in Fort Worth as a member of the WhiteWings on August 18 to begin a four-game series. It is also Police/Firefighters Night at LaGrave Field that evening, as the Cats' players and staff will honor local heroes that serve the community year round.
