Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
ABILENE, TX - If you look deeper than their 8-13 home record, you will realize that the Dogs have found some Walt Driggers magic this summer. Kyle Nichols produced more heart-stopping drama when his double in the bottom of the ninth inning scored both Joe Weik and Geraldo Valentin to lift Abilene to a 9-8 victory over Edinburg.
Weik came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth and bounced single through the middle. Valentin then chopped one toward second baseman Wilmer Pino who hesitated before reaching for a ball that eventually snuck under his glove and into center field. Nichols then unloaded on the first pitch he saw from reliever Paul Koss, scorching a two-run double into right-center field.
With the game tied at seven, Kevin Gelinas pitched the top of the ninth and allowed Felix Molina to knock in the go-ahead run with a singled to left-center. However, Gelinas prevented further damage by getting Cristobal Santana to bounce into an inning ending double play.
38-year-old righty Freddy Flores made his Abilene debut on the hill and allowed the game's first run in the second inning.
But Wilson Batista would not let the Dogs trail for long, cracking a two-run homer off lefty starter Miguel Martinez in the bottom of the second, giving the Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
In a back-and-forth game, the Roadrunners regained the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Felix Molina highlighted the three-run frame with a two-run double into the left-center field gap to place the Roadrunner back in front, 4-2.
The Dogs tied it in the bottom of the third when Davis Page drove in Jason Martin - who began the inning with a triple - and Gerlado Valentin knocked in the equalizer with on fielder's choice groundout.
Abilene took a 7-5 lead in the on Danny Gonzalez's two-run single in the fifth off Martinez. The 29-year-old went six innings, allowing 10 hits, ad seven runs in his worst statistical start of the season.
Edinburg tied the game at seven off Flores with two runs in the sixth. The righty last six frames and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits while striking out seven and walking two.
The Dogs will head on the road to Fort Worth for a three-game series beginning at 7:05 on Friday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
