Fort Wayne, IN - Infielder Seth Johnston was placed on the disabled list today and A.J. Davidiuk, the San Diego Padres 29th-round selection in this year's June Amateur Draft was promoted from the Arizona Padres, Fort Wayne Wizards officials announced.
Johnston was injured running to first on a base hit during the Wizards 4-2 loss to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (Tampa Bay Devil Rays affiliate) on Saturday. He is hitting .275 with a team-high 29 doubles. Johnston is also tied with Kyle Blanks and Daryl Jones with a team-best 10 home runs and is second with 52 runs batted in (tied with Blanks).
Davidiuk (Day-vah-DUKE) joins the Wizards after being named the 2006 Southern Conference Player of the Year after leading Furman University to a 32-23 record and a 16-11, third place finish in conference action. He hit .362 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI overall and hit .430 with eight home runs and 31 RBI in league play.
He finished his Furman career ranked first with 54 doubles, second in hits with 264, fourth in runs (155) and runs batted in (147) and ninth in home runs with 24. He graduated cum laude on June 3 with a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience.
With the Arizona Padres, Davidiuk hit .279 with four doubles, one triple and 11 RBI in 17 games.
Also, the Wizards pitching staff will be short-handed after the Padres trade with the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Left-hander Fabian Jimenez and right-hander Joel Santo were traded to the Cubs organization in exchange for major leaguer Scott Williamson.
Jimenez was 5-7 with a 4.43 earned run average and 54 strikeouts in 17 starts and Santo was 6-6 with a 5.38 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 20 appearances, including 15 starts. Both players are expected to join the Peoria Chiefs, the Cubs Midwest League affiliate.
Davidiuk is expected to join the Wizards in Battle Creek when Fort Wayne concludes a four-game series against the Devil Rays today.
Fort Wayne begins an eight-game homestand starting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday against the Clinton Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers affiliate).
