Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities won both ends of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium, sneaking out a 2-1 victory in the opener before scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh to complete a 6-5, come-from-behind win in game two. Jose Martinez went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and a game-winning hit on the twin bill, while Shane Robinson hit safely in each game to push his hitting streak to 18.

Quad Cities (17-12, 51-46) improves to five games over .500 for the first time this year, improving to 7-5 in doubleheader games while pulling off their second doubleheader sweep of the season. Cedar Rapids (15-14, 46-53) leaves town after losing all three games of the series, as the Swing have defeated the Kernels in eight of their 11 meetings in 2006.

After taking game one, the Swing entered the bottom of the seventh inning of game two trailing 5-3. Casey Rowlett started the rally with a single to right-center, and he was replaced by Jon Jay at first base after a fielder's choice groundout. Randy Roth snapped an 0-for-15 skid at the plate with a line single to left, and Bryan Anderson followed with a run-scoring hit that brought Quad Cities to within one run. After a walk loaded the bases, Jose Martinez stepped up and lined a single to left that Stantrel Smith could not track down, scoring Roth and Anderson to give the Swing a dramatic 6-5 victory.

Martinez' late heroics gave Scott Vander Weg (5-1) the win, while reliever Tim Didjurgis (0-6) retired only one batter in the seventh inning for the loss.

Quad Cities was trailing 2-0 in the fourth when they fought back to snatch a temporary lead. A two-out double by Martinez brought Anderson home, and one batter later Luis Cotto's single scored Martinez to tie the game. Two batters later Robinson's single drove in Cotto, extending his hitting streak to 18 games while simultaneously giving the Swing a 3-2 advantage.

The Kernels got those three runs right back in the top of the fifth, however, as they were determined to leave John O'Donnell Stadium with no less than a split. The big blow came with two outs when Hainley Statia smacked a two-run double against reliever Jonathan Mikrut, giving Cedar Rapids a 5-3 lead that would last until the final frame.

Game one featured a hard-fought pitcher's duel, as Donnie Smith and Moose Mosebach put matching zeroes on the scoreboard through the first five frames.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, the Swing broke through against Mosebach. Martinez hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With the infield in Daniel Nelson bounced a single through the middle to plate the game's first run, and later in the inning with the bases loaded he scored on Jay's groundout for the 2-0 advantage.

Though the Kernels fought back with one run in the top of the seventh, a critical double play ended their threat and enabled Chris Perez to notch his third save in as many attempts. With nobody out and a man on base in a one-run game, the University of Miami product struck out Jordan Renz looking as Anderson gunned down Dallas Morris trying to steal second to empty the bases with two outs. One batter later, a routine fly ball to right ended the game.

Smith (1-0) was strong in his first Swing start of 2006, twirling six shutout innings and striking out one while holding Cedar Rapids to just four hits. Mosebach (7-5) was also solid for the Kernels - carrying a two-hit shutout into the sixth - but the righty allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in the complete-game loss.
