Kane County Cougars News Release
South Bend, IN - Jose Pineda, Anthony Recker, Steve Kleen, Chad Boyd and Todd Johnson all had multiple hits and the Kane County Cougars broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh inning and cruised to a 12-3 victory Sunday afternoon in the series finale against South Bend.
Anthony Recker's two run double gave the Cougars the lead for good in the fifth scoring both Johnson and Justin Sellers. A moment later Chad Boyd's single plated Pineda for a 6-3 advantage and the cats would not be threatened again. Kane County sent ten batters to the plate in the seventh scoring six times on seven hits to insure a split of the two game series. Recker began the onslaught with a triple and the next four hitters, Boyd, Wes Long, Raul Padron and Johnson all singled giving the Cougars a 9-3 cushion. Later, a single off of the bat of Kleen left the bases loaded for Pineda who promptly ended any South Bend hopes of a rally with a three run scoring double that put the contest out of reach.
Pineda finished the day with a total of five RBI's, Boyd chipped in three and both Recker and Johnson notched a pair. Ben Jukich pitched five innings allowing three runs on nine hits picking up his third win without a loss in the process. The SilverHawks Ryan Schreppel (4-10) was charged with the loss.
The Cougars will continue their eight game road trip with a four game set at Cedar Rapids beginning Monday night. RHP Jared Lansford, 9-5, 3.19, is scheduled to start for Kane County.
