Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (July 23, 2006) With two on and no outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, Lance Beus fielded a bunt by Josh Johnson and threw the ball away down the third base line allowing Valentino Arce to score and give the Burlington Bees (13-17, 48-49) a 2-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (10-20, 37-63) at Community Field this afternoon. With the win, the Bees get a split of this four-game series and win the season series 8-4 over Wisconsin.
Beus (0-1) almost lost the game an inning earlier when he walked the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but got a popout and a comebacker to get out of that jam. Beus was the third Rattlers pitcher of the afternoon. Starter David Asher pitched a career-high seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits in seven innings. The run came on a solo home run by Miguel Vega in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vega leads the team with 12 home runs and the Bees have now hit a home run in a season-high five straight games. Edgar Guaramato allowed a hit and a walk, but worked out of the jam for a scoreless eighth.
Bees' starter Erik Cordier worked four shutout innings and allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three before reaching his pitch count. He was limited to 60 pitches after missing a start due to a blister on his right index finger. Cordier has not allowed a run in nine innings over his last two starts.
David Henninger pitched the middle three innings and allowed the Rattlers only run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Juan Guzman singled, stole second, and scored on a two-out double by Kuo Hui Lo. Henninger allowed three hits and struck out two. RH Chris Hayes (3-3) finished the final three innings and got the win. He allowed one hit and walked two batters intentionally while striking out three.
The Bees continue this home stand tomorrow night with the first of a four-game series against the Beloit Snappers. RH Mario Santiago (2-2, 4.43) will start for the Bees against RH Oswaldo Sosa (7-7, 2.90) of the Snappers. The gates will open at 6:00 for Dollar Monday presented by Miller Lite.
