Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - Chi-Hung Cheng provided the Lansing Lugnuts with their second consecutive strong start in a 4-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. The win, which came before 3,864 fans, allowed Lansing to salvage a series split.
Cheng (8-5) was impressive on Sunday, using all of his pitches to effectively to baffle Peoria over six innings. He scattered three hits in the start and fanned eight batters. Peoria failed to score in the final 17 innings of the series.
The Lugnuts took the lead in the first inning, taking advantage of two walks issued by Peoria's Jeff Samardzija. Anthony Hatch followed the walks with a double to right field that scored Zack Kalter to make it 1-0. After a Brian Pettway sacrifice fly extended the lead to 2-0, David Hicks ripped a double into left-center field to give Lansing a 3-0 lead.
Samardzija (0-1), the dual sport star from Notre Dame, settled down after the first though. He retired 18 of the final 20 men that he faced, but took the loss for the Chiefs.
Lansing added one more run in the seventh inning when Hatch doubled and later scored on a Hicks' sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Edward Rodriguez got his second save of the season, tossing the final three frames for Lansing.
Lansing (51-46, 11-19) will hit the road for a quick four game set against the Dayton Dragons beginning Monday evening at Fifth Third Field. A.J. Wideman (1-2, 3.48) will start for the Lugnuts, as he faces fellow southpaw Travis Wood (7-2, 4.12). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
