Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 23, 2006 - The Swing of the Quad Cities swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader from the Cedar Rapids Kernels by the scores of 2-1 and 6-5, and also swept a rain-shortened series, 3-0.
In the first game, it was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning as a leadoff double by Jose Martinez and a single by Dan Nelson gave the Swing a 1-0 lead. Then, a bunt single and walk loaded the bases and a groundout RBI by Jon Jay gave the Swing a 2-0 lead going into the top of the 7th.
The Kernels rallied for a run as Mark Trumbo singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dallas Morris singled to score Trumbo to make the score 2-1 as the stage was set for a Kernels comeback win. With nobody out, Jordan Renz was caught looking at strike three from Chris Perez and Morris was thrown out trying to steal second for a strike âem out, throw âem out double play. Flint Wipke flew out to right to end the game.
Kernels starter Robert Mosebach (7-5) was the tough-luck loser, going six innings and giving up only five hits with two runs, two K's and two walks. Swing starter Donnie Smith (1-0) got the win and Chris Perez picked up his 3rd save.
Things looked better in the nightcap as the Kernels jumped out to a 2-0 lead as with two outs in the third, Stantrel Smith singled and stole second. Brad Coon drew a walk and Marco Albano doubled to score Smith and Coon.
The Swing took the lead in the fourth as they scored three runs off relief pitcher Tim Mattison, using five hits and a wild pitch to make the score 3-2 Swing.
The Kernels rallied to score three in the top of the fifth as singles by Flint Wipke and Brett Martinez put runners on the corners with no one out. Stantrel Smith grounded into a double play to tie the score at 3-3. Brad Coon drew a key two out walk and stole second. Marco Albano was hit by a pitch and after a Swing pitching change, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Hainley Statia delivered a key two out double that scored Coon and Albano to make the score 5-3 Kernels.
The Swing would rally off Kernels reliever Tim Didjurgis (0-6) as three singles and a walk made the score 5-4 Kernels with the bases loaded and one out. Jose Martinez singled to left to score two runs and win the game for the Swing, 6-5.
The losses drop the Kernels to 15-14 in the second half and into the lower tier of the MWL Western Division standings with division leaders Kane County starting a four game series on Monday. The Kernels will start Anthony Ortega (1-2) as Monday's game is a Mix 96.5 Dollar Dog Monday where all regular hot dogs are just a buck.
Tickets can be order by calling the Kernels Ticket Office after 10 am on Monday at (319) 896-7560, or order on-line, any time at www.kernels.com and have your tickets ready at will call when you get to the game.
