Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Barons closer Bobby Jenks has been recalled by the White Sox and will go directly to Chicago prior to their game today versus the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. When Jenks makes his first appearance for the White Sox it will be his Major League Debut. Jenks got the word after the game on Monday night in Huntsville after he picked up his league leading 19th save in the Barons 1-0 victory over the Stars.

Jenks, 24, becomes the 38th player to have gone directly from Class-AA Birmingham to the White Sox to make their major-league debut since the Barons became affiliated with the Sox in 1986. He joins other players like Robin Ventura, Frank Thomas, Mike Cameron, Mark Buerhle, Miguel Olivo and Neal Cotts on the list.

For the year, Jenks has gone 2-1 with 2.85 ERA (13 ER/41 IP) and is leading the Southern League with 19 saves. In 35 appearances for the Barons, Jenks has struck out 48 batters in 41 innings for a 10.5 K/9 IP ratio. He has successfully converted 19 of 22 saves on the year and in the last two weeks has repeatedly hit 100 mph on the radar gun.

A native of Mission Hills, CA., Jenks has gone 19-31 with a 4.76 ERA (229 ER/433.1 IP) and 449 strikeouts in 115 career minor-league games (80 starts). He originally was drafted by Anaheim in the fifth round in 2000 and made 80 starts in the Angels system before being converted to a reliever by the White Sox after being claimed off waivers on December 17, 2004.
