Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Aeros right-hander Jeanmar Gomez was named to the Eastern League All-Star team today, taking the place of the recently promoted Hector Rondon. Rondon, who was a fan selection to the team and is expected to make his AAA debut for the Columbus Clippers tomorrow night, was promoted from Akron Sunday. The Aeros remain one of three teams to have five players named to the squad, as first baseman Beau Mills, catcher Carlos Santana, left fielder Nick Weglarz, and closer Vinnie Pestano will join Gomez and team up to represent the Southern Division. The game will be played July 15th at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey.

Gomez burst onto the scene with Akron this season, winning each of his four starts in an Aeros uniform capped off by a nine-strikeout perfect game May 21st at Trenton. It was the first perfect game and individual no-hitter in franchise history, as well as the second nine-inning perfect game in the 86-year history of the Eastern League. Gomez is 6-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 12 starts for the Aeros, and opened 2009 by going 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in four starts for Class A Kinston before being promoted April 30th. He is tied for first in the Indians player development system with eight wins between the two teams, while he is third with 73 strikeouts and first with 94.2 innings pitched. The 21-year-old Venezuelan has six quality starts on the year for Akron, and has five shutout starts of six innings of longer.

The Aeros begin a quick three-game home stand tonight against the second-place Reading Phillies for Two for Tuesday starting at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Akron has yet to officially announce a starter for tonight's game, while the Phillies will have Vance Worley (5-5, 3.59 ERA) on the mound. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
