Defenders Shutout NB 3-0
July 7, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT- After a 58 minute rain delay the Nutmeg Showdown restarted as the first place Defenders and second place Rock Cats met again. Connecticut (49-34) captured their seventh straight road victory at New Britain Stadium with a 3-0 shutout win over New Britain.
DH-Adam Witter legged out an infield single in the second inning to plate LF-Bobby Felmy who leadoff with a single and that was essentially all the Defenders needed to claim game one of the best of four series.
The Defenders added a pair of runs in the sixth taking advantage of two Rock Cat errors and delivering two hits. CF-Mike McBryde leadoff with a single and advanced to third as he attempted to steal second and RHP-Kyle Waldrop sailed a throw over the first baseman's head. With the infield in, 2B-Toby Gardenhire booted a LF-Bobby Felmy chopper and McBryde scored. Felmy headed to third on RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve's base hit to right and set up 3B-Brad Boyer who delivered a sac fly to center and Connecticut had their 3-0 lead.
Connecticut received a solid start from veteran righty Garrett Broshuis (1-0) who recently joined the team from Triple A Fresno. Broshuis carved out 6.2 solid scoreless innings scattering six hits, walked one and struck out a pair earning his first win. Rock Cats' starter, RHP-Frank Mata (1-2) didn't fair as well even though he tossed a season high five innings in just his second start but allowed one earned run off of four hits, walked one and fanned a lone batter.
Reliever LHP-Matt Yourkin and closer RHP-Dan Otero recently named to the E.L. All Star Team helped complete the shutout as well as Otero picked up his sixteenth save of the season.
Brock Bond raised his current on base streak to 51 games going 2 for 4 in the win.
The Showdown continues tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 5:05pm at New Britain Stadium. In game one Defenders LHP-Madison Bumgarner (6-1) against the Rock Cats RHP-Cole DeVries (5-7). Game two has RHP-Deolis Guerra making his Double A debut for New Britain and Connecticut starter is still to be determined.
