Akron RubberDucks News Release

So Close...Harrisburg managed a win in game four of Akron's three-day visit to Metro Bank Park, defeating the Aeros by the final score of 8-2 Monday evening and avoiding a sweep in the 12-game season series. A two-run single by third baseman Jared Goedert in the second inning provided the initial scoring of the night, but the Senators stormed back by scoring eight unanswered runs. Lefty starter Ryan Edell notched his fifth quality start of the season in allowing just one run on four hits in six innings, but reliever Carlton Smith took the loss in permitting seven runs (two earned) in the final two frames. The Aeros managed only one hit after the second inning, and three errors in Harrisburg's five-run eighth inning gave the Senators their first win against Akron in 2009, coming in the final regular-season matchup between the clubs. Ryan the Rhino...Edell's efficient performance last night came as he celebrated his 26th birthday in fine fashion by posting one of his best starts of the season. After beginning the season with on relief appearance for the Aeros, Edell was promoted to Class AAA Columbus on April 12th and went 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in nine games out of the bullpen. Since coming back to Akron May 12th, he has been outstanding in his return the starting rotation, as in 11 starts he is now 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and has also registered 59 strikeouts against only 15 walks while holding opponents to a .207 batting average with runners on base.

Beautiful Bullpen...While Smith took the loss for the Aeros yesterday, the entire relief unit has been near spotless lately. In the past 10 contests spanning 26.2 innings pitched, the bullpen has a 1.03 ERA in allowing only nine runs (three earned) on 22 hits. Additionally, they have a 3-2 record and 21 strikeouts with only two walks. Smith's performance last night ended a streak of 17.2 scoreless innings dating back to June 1st, although RHP Steven Wright has an active streak of 18.0 scoreless innings.

Sign and Drive...The Indians today announced the signing of RHP Michael Tejera, who will start tonight against the Reading Phillies. Tejera began this season with two separate clubs in the Class AAA Mexican League, going 3-1 with a 3.83 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) for los Tigres de Quintana Roo and 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) for los Sultanes de Monterrey. Originally from Havana, Cuba, Tejera and his friend Hansel Izquierdo defected as teenagers in 1994. After establishing residency, Tejera was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the sixth round of the 1995 June Draft and made his Major League debut with Florida in 1999. He missed the 2000 season with an injury, and spent all of 2002 and 2003 with the Marlins. He has also made nine appearances at the big league level with the Texas Rangers in 2004 and 2005, and spent each of the last three years at the AAA level with Fresno (Giants) in 2006, Indianapolis (Pirates) in 2007 and Pawtucket (Red Sox) in 2008. Incredibly, Tejera and Izquerdo went on to become teammates on the Marlins in 2002.
