Chicago Dogs News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago Dogs have transferred the contract of Jake Dahlberg to the San Francisco Giants, the club announced Wednesday. Dahlberg will report to the High-A Eugene Emeralds and becomes the fifth Chicago Dogs pitcher to be signed by an MLB organization in 2021.
Dahlberg made nine starts and six relief appearances for the Dogs in 2021 and finished with a 6-2 record. Dahlberg's 76 strikeouts leads all American Association pitchers, and his 3.04 ERA is third in the league.
Dahlberg's 0.98 WHIP held opposing hitters to a .214 batting average. Dahlberg prides himself on constantly attacking the strike zone, which is reflected in just 11 walks across 62 innings.
The highlight of Dahlberg's 2021 campaign came on June 30 when he tossed a complete game shutout against the division-leading Milwaukee Milkmen. In this game, Dahlberg braved the rain to allow two hits, zero walks and 10 strikeouts.
"I got three guys. Here's my best stuff. I'm challenging them all," Dahlberg said after his start on June 30. "I did that every inning. I didn't look ahead, I didn't think back, I just stayed in that moment and I trusted myself."
This start, along with a six-inning shutout on July 5 against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, led to Dahlberg being named the American Association Pitcher of the Week on July 6. Dahlberg struck out eight batters and allowed three hits in this start versus the RailCats.
Dahlberg started the season as a bullpen arm for the Dogs, but succeeded as he made the transition back to a starter. Dahlberg was the winning pitcher in five of his last starts, allowing 12 runs and striking out 49 batters in 37.2 innings during that time frame.
Dahlberg was also a member of the Dogs' pitching staff in both 2020 and 2019. In 2020, Dahlberg pitched to a 4-4 record in 11 starts. He recorded a 5.52 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 58.2 innings.
His 2020 season was highlighted by a 5-3 win over Sioux Falls when Dahlberg tossed six innings, seven strikeouts, eight hits and three earned runs. Dahlberg also gave up two earned runs on three hits in six and two-thirds innings in a win over the eventual league champions, the Milwaukee Milkmen.
Dahlberg also appeared in 19 games for the Dogs in 2019, starting 18 contests. Dahlberg finished with a 9-6 record and pitched to a 4.48 ERA while striking out 100 batters and walking just 31. His 110 and one-third of an inning was second-most on team and 20th-most in American Association.
Dahlberg's 2019 season was highlighted by an eight inning outing on May 26 when he struck out seven batters, walked one and allowed three runs against Milwaukee. Dahlberg shut out the Sioux City Explorers on June 1, striking out six. with zero walks. Dahlberg struck out season-high nine batters against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on June 6, and dealt a three-hit shutout in a 13-0 win over Winnipeg on August 15.
Dahlberg is a 6-foot, 205-pound pitcher out of Vancouver, Washington. The 27-year-old Dahlberg now calls Chicago home after three seasons with the Chicago Dogs. His nicknames include "Dahly, Bergy and Bulldog."
